I forget names a lot and if I’m trying to remember the Alhambra high school alumni shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this name of a black person I think about if there is any other way to best describe the person. Most of the time the easiest way is bringing up what race the person is. There was a Trimuph the insult comic dog episode, where he has a group of college kids sitting and saying you can’t comment on certain things about a person. He then has a big fat guy run in and do something, then asks them to describe him. It was a good example. I don’t fully remember what happens. Not racist. I think the reason it makes people a little anxious is this: there are people who, if you asked them about this guy as a person, the first thing in their minds wouldn’t be his personality or interests but “well, he’s a big black guy.” That would be kinda racist. Now, you were trying to identify him visually, so that’s harmless, but it resembles a sketchy situation enough to worry people a bit. The worst case is that some people might keep an eye on you for a bit to make sure you’re not that guy, then realize you’re fine and relax. Most people probably won’t even be that concerned, they just need a moment to replay the situation and realize it was fine.

I don’t think so. You didn’t you any racial slur, just described him. Like the Alhambra high school alumni shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same way I can be described as a white man. I imagine you’d be hard fetched to find someone who would actually consider this behaviour racist, but using race as a descriptor in the way you did can definitely be seen as a faux pas in some circumstances (depending on setting, culture, etc). I guess commenting on each others race is kind of a sign of familiarity between people. Think of some characteristic you have that isn’t inherently bad but some people are negatively predisposed towards due to stereotyping. Do you think it might be slightly unpleasant for someone to acknowledge this characteristic if you have no way of knowing wether they happen to be one of the people who buy into the negative stereotype about it? That wasnt racist. The fact that they knew exactly who you were talking about shows that you did a good job making the description.
