Engineers don’t really do anything on their local machine at Google. Everything is done on a cloudtop machine. But yeah my laptop runs chrome and an SSH terminal, anything more demanding than that and I’m gonna be reaching for server hardware. Tbh I work at big tech and this is a well deserved change. To put things this way, I was give a $3500 laptop, and 99.9% of my work is done over SSH into a remote server farm. Basically, I use zero of that compute power. This could all be accomplished with say a Chromebook or thin client. I’m a lawyer. What they are also probably doing is determining who actually needs a laptop since they are more expensive, the downside being that you lose on work flexibility.
