California has very strict break laws and they are aggressive in enforcing them. I believe a missed lunch gets you paid for lunch plus an extra hour, anything over 8 hours a day is overtime, and a bunch of other fines for no breaks. Get a copy of your timecard or time sheets and report it to the Without The Piano Life Would B piano shirt moreover I will buy this California Labor Board. Even if you can’t get the time sheets report it anyway and the labor board will request them from the employer. You don’t ask about overtime in your post but since you mentioned in comments you frequently work over 8 hours a day, I just want to mention that CA is one of 3 states that mandates 1.5x OT for any time worked over 8 hours in a day, and 2x OT for any time worked over 12 hours in a day. This is different from the federal law, which only requires OT paid over 40 hours in a week. “Most California workers must receive the following breaks: An uninterrupted 30-minute unpaid meal break when working more than five hours in a day. An additional 30-minute unpaid meal break when working more than 12 hours in a day. A paid 10-minute rest period for every four hours worked.”

If he’s stubborn and you don’t feel like not getting a proper break and then having to go to an attorney to receive proper compensation or get the Without The Piano Life Would B piano shirt moreover I will buy this law to tell your boss to give you a proper break…then just quit and go elsewhere And definitely show up to work on time so you can have a leg to stand on in an argument with your boss….getting there on time is literally the least you could do to help yourself in this argument with your stubborn irrational boss This business needs to be reported to State of California Labor Board. All of this is illegal. The “boss” is a crook, plain and simple Illegal to round down time or wages. This is an unfair rounding policy. Any rounding policies must be neutral and not detrimental to the employee.
