I started coasting about five years ago. I keep my skills up but have no desire to lead anything. I did management years ago. Hated it. I’m here to tell you it gets harder and harder to move up when you get older and you just don’t give a shit anymore the closer you get to retirement I had 3 people under me for about 2 years after a misguided reorg, I was a “working manager” but I learned enough to know that I hated it. Some people are really good at managing people and projects and I’ve seen some flourish, others think that’s going into management is the next step up the ladder and I’ve seen more than half fail.

I also love that I find myself swinging between the two poles of the spectrum. There have been points in my career where I couldn’t learn enough on the side, and others where doing the minimum amount to yield a positive review was exactly where I wanted to be. I mean, obviously have a life outside of work, but a lot of us do get fulfillment from various aspects of our jobs and hate other aspects. Seems like we should be trying to maximize the fulfilling aspects (for me, solving problems) and minimize the soul-sucking aspects (for me, documentation that nobody reads or cares about anyway).
