The 1 time out of 10 where it did hurt it was pretty much a sharp pinch on my arm, nothing that would ruin my day. I used to have a very bad phobia of needles, but after spending a week in hospital where I was basically used as a pin cushion got me over that fear. Personally I have issues with it due to a bad experience when I was a child, some nurses that don’t do it as often may not be as good. The way I’ve managed to get better with it is to make sure I am hydrated and have eaten, this makes your veins a bit easier for them to see. I know it’s not as positive as other responses but I thought it worth you getting the other perspective and how I’ve been able to get past it. The pinch is the same as one of the less painful shots (so, barely hurts). Then having your blood drawn is, to me, not really “painful”. More of just an unpleasent and strange sensation. It’s not a pleasurable experiance, but it’s nothing to get worried about either. Considering you’re scared enough to make this post, I promise you the anticipation you’re feeling is worse than the actual thing. I hate blood work and find if I look away and the nurse drawing the blood is good I don’t even notice it. If they aren’t the best you will feel a small sting when the needle goes in but it’s not bad.

Just look away and get your mind thinking of something else. It will be over fast and you’ll feel silly for being worried. Pain is relative. It’s an ache that’s most intense when the needle is first inserted, and it aches mildly, but you don’t feel the blood leaving your body, and once the needle is taken out, the nurse just puts a cotton swab and a plaster/band aid on to keep it in place. The bloods are usually taken from the inside of your elbow—the veins are nice and big and near the surface there! It can be very mildly sore for about half an hour bending your elbow, but honestly, it’s really not much at all. I actually used to have a huge needle phobia because I always had a bad response to them—I’d pass out, basically. Turns out I’m now being investigated for POTS—my autonomic nervous system doesn’t work properly and that contributed to my reaction. Now what I do, is keep as calm as I can. I see the procedure as just a formality, just as simple as awaiting for a food order to arrive or queueing up at the store (although, that’s a bad example—standing in a queue flares me up but getting my bloods taken is a walk in the park compared to standing still). I get called in, and I sit relaxed in the chair, relax my arm until they tell me to clench my fist (gets the veins to pop up), they do the tourniquet and I watch my clinically stretchy skin get all wrinkled from it, then I watch them prep the needle. By this point, I’m moving my feet slowly to keep the blood from pooling in my legs. Then, I just keep up with the slow and steady breathing, and I watch. Some people can’t watch, but for me, watching means it’s not a shock when the needle goes in, and I can see how much longer it’s going to take. Before I know it, it’s over and I’m completely fine.
