Genuinely curious: How do we think this happened? Is it the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this kids growing up on phones and tablets too much? Was it the effect of COVID? Both? Something else? I’ve been hearing this a lot, and I’m trying to wrap my head around why it could be happening. It’s not like the human race suddenly got more stupid. These kids are just as capable as previous generations, but they’ve been failed in some way. I drive warships for a living as an officer in a non-USA navy. I was not good at high school math. I am quite good at ship navigation math. We mostly use basic arithmetic and heavily bastardized versions of sine and radians in order to navigate safety. I’m not saying high school math was wasted on me, but there are very few occasions where I use it outside of the very narrow application for my job.

To be fair, I still don’t understand percentages that much, & I’ve had my coworker give me a percentage presentation & teach them to me like at least once a week. As well as computer short cuts & I’ve been graduated for like 5 years I responded to a text yesterday regarding homework. Many parents flatly refuse to let their children do it. And they seem to think that is ok, and their household schedule takes first place to anything else. I am not at all surprised about your list. This is being brought on by allowing the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this children to decide if they wish to put in the effort to succeed of not. My guess is there is going to be a lot more of “not” in the future. And, then it will be the teachers’ faults.
Chicago schools just released a report indicating a substantial rebound in student performance. Are you certain about this? How could ot have gotten THAT bad in just a few years??? Like… I’m not 50, I’m 31, I graduated from high school 13 years ago I know things change in a decade, but….. THAT much???? Not trying to boast? but I learned my second language in pre-school and began reading at a college level in early elementary. Of course, that was over 20 years ago I returned to school in middle age a few years back to pursue a nursing degree. I was in an accelerated program that required you already have at least a bachelor’s degree in another discipline to walk in the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this door. There were also a bunch of specific prerequisite courses that had to be completed prior to admission, including Chem I, Bio I and II, and microbiology.

Where to buy this Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt
So many students had trouble solving basic “Med math” problems that the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this program forced instuctors to include math problems on every exam, even if they were completely irrelevant to the course material being covered on the exam. And it was just basic unit conversion and ratios. A typical question would be something like this: A loading dose of heparin of 80 units per kg is ordered for a patient weighing 220 lbs. You have available heparin 1,000 units per mL. How many mL of solution should be administered to the patient? I learned that stuff in high school chemistry back around 1983, but I’d say at least half my classmates were still struggling with it on their second college degree. I’m so glad I grew up and went to school when I did.
I’ve been teaching college for the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this past 6 years, 100 and 200 level courses, so mainly kids right outta high school. In that time, I’ve seen a sharp drop off in what I can reasonably expect students to accomplish. I’ve dumbed down everything, then dumbed it down some more, to the point where a student more or less just has to show up and pay attention to pass. No real problem solving is involved anymore, just basic testing for a cursory understanding of the material. I feel guilty because I teach computer science, which leads to an industry famous for its brutal tech interviews. But students show up not knowing how to save a file, who don’t read my syllabus or listen when I read it to them, who ignore emails, and who only care about my class when they are failing. If they put half the effort into the material as they did in trying to convince me to excuse an entire semester of late or missing work, they’d be coding experts.
I have no idea what’s going on. Hopefully it’s a blip and not the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this fall of civilization, because kids are fucking dumb these days (no offense zoomers, it’s probably just confirmation bias!) More than ten years back I spent a year teaching eleventh grade physics in Florida and after introducing f=ma none of them could figure out how to solve for a. But if a national strike did somehow happen… You know what’s gonna happen next. State and National Guard soldiers become teachers. It happened in some Nursing homes. Lack of funding, creating a dumber society is the goal. Its what the Republicans have been doing since the 80s and it’s working really well right now. How are these kids still passing? In my youth, it was rare, but not impossible, to hear of students who needed to repeat a grade to advance. How are they reaching you with so few skills, and how are they able to advance after that? Are they being gifted progress through either administrative intervention or self-interest? At least when I’m 90 and still have to work because I’ll never be able to financially retire, I won’t have to worry about the younger generations taking my job. Of course this is also a good excuse to have robots and AI do everything I tell you all it’s the administration and school boards which have, for all intents and purposes, castrated teacher’s abilities to effectively teach. There is zero support. As someone who has listened to elementary school teachers tell their horror stories, all it takes is one maladjusted child disrupting constantly to destroy the entire classroom experience for all of the kids. Add on to the fact that no sort of support staff available for these kids and all you get is 75/25 focus of the teacher trying to teach through the “problem” child. Two or three of these types with no support from the front office and you are all but helpless.
One of the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this stories which sent my jaw to the floor was one where a (elementary aged) boy punched his pregnant teacher in the stomach, was sent to some room away from the class by the principal, then allowed to come back. That’s unacceptable and it really has me wondering what these wealthy school districts are allocating their funds towards, because it’s obviously not towards helping out these teachers with 25+ students… I’m a college-aged gen z kid and most younger ppl I’ve interacted with seem like functional human beings… can someone elaborate on this trend? Is it new? Is it underpriveleged backgrounds or some other socioeconomic factor? I’ve personally not encountered anyone with brainrot so severe they can’t grasp basic concepts, but I guess I exist in a pretty privileged circle.
Arizona mom of 4. I love and respect my kids teachers, they could read and spell sight words before starting kindergarten. One of my kids was really struggling in third grade. It took 6 iep meetings, and getting the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this school board involved to hold him back. They just wanted to keep passing him along even though the teacher completely agreed with me. We had to have a meeting because the state dinged the district for having too many IEP students fail their state tests. I’m in Ohio. I got 7th and 8th Graders reading at 2nd and 3rd grade levels. Doesn’t matter, those kids take their grade level test. The state says we can’t give kids read aloud or text to speech accommodations anymore on their reading tests AND all our goals have to be written at the kids grade level (yes my kids reading at a 2nd grade level have IEP goals written for the 7th/8th grade level). The state also told us that if we don’t move kids out of the resource room small group setting where the IS teaches them and move them into a general education setting, that they would come in and do it for us.
So after all this, I sit in a meeting with this big wig special ed person from the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this state and their solution for getting these kids to start passing these tests that are 4+ grades beyond where they are at academically is to…. Pull the kids into a small group setting more often…. The very thing they told us two years ago we absolutely needed to stop doing or else. Nobody who can make decisions that matter are going to care. Why? Because this will mostly ruin the lives of poor people, and the rich can always pay to have their kids fast-tracked for academic credentials – no matter how incompetent they may be. Then there is nepotism on top, their kids will be fine. These kids are being intentionally left behind, because the rich would rather live in decadence, than build society. In my area there would be 1 teacher to 30+ kids, they tried their best with everyone. There are plenty of adults I know who can’t sound out words, poor things kept falling through the cracks year by year. I myself never learned multiplication tables. Not even 10 years ago.
Has anyone considered all the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this chemicals and food additives in the American diet has destroyed the brains of the kids? Something is not right with these kids cognitively. As a young, childless women in science, is there anything that non-teachers can do to help? I had no idea it was this bad simply because i’m not around children or teachers in everyday life. I have 8th graders who can’t peer edit because their own grammar is so bad they don’t know what proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure is supposed to look like. Their idea of essay writing is to plagiarize from Google or AI generate, and when they are called out on it they don’t think I can tell the difference between 8th grade vocabulary and professional writing. I’m gen Z and not a teacher, but I missed a massive amount of school growing up from medical issues. I only just finished my highschool diploma at a community college last year as a 23 year old, and at 24 I am now over halfway through my first year of earning my associates degree. It should surprise no one that I have some pretty massive knowledge gaps, but I am continuously amazed by the fact that I’m not as far behind as many of my slightly younger peers. The latter half of Gen Z that went through/finished highschool during the pandemic are at such a disadvantage. It has definitely helped level the playing field for me a bit, but everything I hear about Gen Alpha makes me very worried for the future of society as a whole. How widespread is this educational divide? Any input from teachers who are not from the USA?
Not a teacher but it’s a darn shame what a lot of these kids are bringing to the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this table. The sad reality of it is that there are multiple factors playing into this. Parents not advocating for their children, misusing technology as a way to “deal with” their children, the entitlement of many kids because their parents raised them to be that way, etc. These lessons should have been established long before entering school and unfortunately the children will suffer and future generations will as well Dedicated to open discussion about all things teaching. Back to TopJesus. I was a bit of a slow learner when younger because of distractions, but this thread… holy shit. Once I grew up and saw who was running the Department of Education, I knew things were not going to be good. Should this be considered educational warfare to some degree? Schools so underfunded for so long (while we supply billions upon billions a year to arms dealers/manufacturers), curriculum so incredibly lackluster (relative to the day and age we currently live in), and children being flat out ignored by their family (otherwise they’d have the motivation/mindset to actively learn).
I’m reminded of how China has put extreme emphasis on their children’s learning, even to the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this point of enforcing a curfew/time-restraint on their ability to browse entertainment apps or play games. Children in the US seem to mostly be unbridled consumers of products and entertainment. Also reminded of the quote “If you want to destroy any nation without war, make adultery or nudity common in the young generation.” – Salahuddin Ayyubi . The end result is the same regardless of there being an aggressor or it being self inflicted, and regardless of the destruction coming from adultery or absolute ignorance. As a parent, any advice on where I can turn to understand/know where my kids should be? We move every couple of years with the military, so the kids have been in a few schools and a few states. Each time I try to grasp what the goals for the year are (what they should know by the end of the year), and I can’t figure it out I’m a student teacher for 7-12 math. My lesson plans for my seventh graders are based on third grade lessons. They expect us to teach multiplying fractions and ratios to seventh graders who lack multiplication fluency
I worked as an airport assistant for unaccompanied minors a few years back, and honestly even that feels like a stretch. Saw everything from children to late teens have absolutely no idea how to do something as simple as connect to a specific wifi signal if their phone didn’t do so automatically, or use their browser app. My folks are 71 and they’re less baffled by electronics than these kids, it’s extremely concerning. This is so sad. It’s wild. I’m in my Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this mid 30s and I remembered playing Mavis Beacon in school to learn how to type… I literally thought that these kids would be so much more proficient at reading and writing because they spent their entire life in front of a keyboard/screen… like Mavis, Beacon was boring… But texting your friends is interesting… You would think that passively they would learn how to read and write… Especially with AutoCorrect…
What do you think is the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this cause? Based off of the ages it doesn’t sound like the COVID shutdown is the biggest cause. Possibly there were problems before 2020. My oldest is 6 but she goes full time to an autism therapy clinic. Unfortunately she’s nonverbal so we’re more concerned with her learning her AAC than writing. Kindergarten was pretty bad for her. It was clear her sped teacher stuck her in a corner with things to stim with and let her do whatever she wanted. We’re trying our hardest to get out of Texas to a state that cares about special needs kiddos. I have a 2 year old and she’s a little sponge so I’m casually teaching her shapes. But big shout out to Sesame Street and Ms Rachel. I was at a parent night at my kids’ school recently and they showed scores for a certain reading test by grade level. The Kindergartners scored pretty high, but the average scores went down drastically year after year. By 5th grade, the reading scores showed about 35% of the students reaching a passing or exceeding level. The other 65% were behind or failing. It was extremely eye opening for me. And we’re supposed to be at one of the best schools in our county. If that’s true, and it may very well be, then we are in so much trouble.
I’m not too worried about my kids yet, because they are both doing very well and seem to be learning a lot, but it is obviously concerning. And to think that when my district laid me off 10 years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this superintendent claimed that students didn’t need a computer teacher because they were digital natives and already knew now to type and everything about computers and the internet. I’m not a teacher, I’m just a member of the general public and hearing some of the things I hear from this subreddit freaks me out. I also have heard things about how some kids are acting right now. And when you bring it up to the parents, it seems like they’ll be on the kids side no matter what. So there is no rectification, it’s going to continue, and it’s probably going to get worse when they become an adult.
I think about smartphones and social media, tik tok, so on and so forth. That stuff has got to have a negative effect on a kid’s development. Follow an example. They have a hard time transferring the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this patterns that they see in an example to a new problem. I’d always wanted to be a high school teacher, but this sort of thing makes me really want to teach kindergarten or first grade I left the states and teach in Japan. I have kids that are 13-14 (1st year middle school, ish) not only being taught seriously high level stuff – pre-calculus, advanced bio, chemistry – which, for me, wasn’t available till high school and most kids didn’t take it but not only are they champs at taking classes at such young ages, they’re passing them with flying colors.
Granted, this is a private school in Tokyo – but when I was trying to teach in America they had me helping out with a teacher who was being forced to corral all the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this worst offenders in the school into one class and try to make ‘due’ till the end of the school year. One of those kids pushed 3 girls in his class out of public school because he was stalking them, and he tried to kill one of the boys. The administrators did nothing time and time and time again, even when it got serious. Conclusion? Education in America has gotten way, way worse. The rest of the world will progress while America suffers Oh, it’s worse. But so-called the “bluntest” tools in the shed were always barely functionable. This was always the case and sure it was exacerbated last 15-20 years. The Ipad and touch screen generation is a thing.
The real problem will come from the Toronto Blue Jays Grateful Dead logo shirt besides I will buy this same deterioration in abilities that are traditionally solid A,B students. The kind that bags at least a couple state university and some small college offers. Hell, my personal experience is from a Tier 1, research university. These are the kids that’ gonna make the bulk of white-collar jobs and up. The difference in their quality in just barely a decade of span from 2015-2023 is staggering. If you thought an arbitrary 8th grade failing to solve 2x=8 is bad, then you have no idea what’s coming from what you think are the A students and how they are supposed to do most of the “carrying” that their demographics is supposed to do. Their confidence never wavered though which in some ways is the worst thing about all of this, if you ever had to deal with them in person.
