Fort Wayne was nice, but the drive in was like corn field corn field corn field meth lab corn field farm meth lab Bratislava. Luckily i was there in the summertime when it was nice, i heard during the winter it can get very depressing I can’t remember the name of specific part, but a place in Goa, India. Now Goa has some lovely beaches and charming people, but it was somewhere in the city we travelled. We had been working with a Child Rescue Centre and been cooking that morning to hand food out to street kids, and this was the place we would hand the food packages out. It wasn’t a slum, because it wasn’t primarily a residential area. There was was some ugly concrete and crumbling infrastructure but that is pretty common in many place. The remember walking on a bridge over a passage for water and the water was almost black and it STANK. There was rubbish there (though not as much as you might expect given how many people lived there) and the smell just hung over the place. It was also incredibly depressing as we handed out packages of food to children only to later see adults take the for from some of them, and running out of food and kids grabbing at you to get the last one. Truly humbling experience. I’m sure there are other places like this and probably worse ones but that’s the one I’ve been to.

City of Vukovar in Croatia just after the Bosnian War had ended. 30k people lived there, 90k air bombs were dropped during the three years of war. There were unexploded ordnances, live mine fields and a single mafia-ran hotel was the only building that had been rebuilt. Everything else had been torn to shreds. I mean there’s a unique ugliness to the American brown brick cities and ghost towns. Especially in the summer. And then add graffiti trash, homeless, broken down cars and burning furniture.. it’s quite ugly. But compared to the horror of living conditions you can see elsewhere in the world. Agreed. Like living in the desert with carpet walls or Africa where you have to be afraid of giant animals. The sheer overpopulation of eastern countries make ugly stuff unfathomable if you only keep your head in the US.
