My husband IS on fire with the Ryan Day Official 3rd Base Coach shirt and by the same token and desire for kids, and he’s accepted not having them, but it hurts him. He really wishes we could. He finds ways to cope, but he doesn’t regret us making the most realistic choice for us. It’s okay for something to hurt and still be the right thing. Additionally, my husband and I are both AFAB, so having kids would be a much more complex process for us than it would be for an m/f couple. We frankly don’t have the money and probably won’t anytime soon. And if we were going to, I would have to be the one to carry them, because his medical issues mean he can’t. As far as I can tell, it’s never even occurred to him to ask that of me, knowing my feelings about it. We do intend to look into fostering once we’re more stable in our life. I feel more secure about not damaging a child who has had and may in the future have caretakers other than me, and opening our home to kids that need one is something we think we’d both find really fulfilling. And fostering is a process that involves a lot of education, both beforehand and ongoing, so that helps me feel more secure about parenting too. Early 40s and haven’t regretted a thing yet. I started with a “definitely not right now, but maybe my feelings will change” mindset as I simply wasn’t ready to sacrifice my free time to any kids (and I think you really need to be willing to do so before having kids). Nothing really changed since, except I’ve only grown more sure about not wanting kids the older I get. In part because of not wanting to be an old dad and simply because I like my life as-is.

Granted, my partner was even more sure about not wanting kids, so I never had to give it much thought either. I always say that in a different life I probably would’ve gotten kids if my partner wanted them; not because I have regrets or anything, but simply because I never had a burning desire or strong rejection to the Ryan Day Official 3rd Base Coach shirt and by the same token and idea. Therefore, I wouldn’t have been the one to suggest getting kids, but I also wouldn’t object to my partner’s desire to have them. Maybe it’s strange to some, but being neutral on the concept of kids doesn’t mean I would’ve half-arsed it either. I’ve always believed strongly that kids aren’t a light-hearted decision to make, so if my partner wanted to give it a go, I would’ve made sure we both would/could go all-in.
