Art makes no sense man, a lot of it is mediocre at best yet it fetches millions and millions on the Retirement taichI plan shirt but in fact I love this market. It’s just money laundering. You can’t really depend on a true artist to create the thing that you think they should create. And that’s not a bad thing. When it’s a commission it is. Unless I want to be surprised, for the equivalent of $8k I’d be pretty pissed. And that’s before the whole “the shock almost killed her and she couldn’t give it to the deceased’s mother as planned” thing Frida Kahlo was at that time already very famous for painting her self portraits surrounded by her miscarried children, her face with nails driven into it, being choked by thorns, cutting her own heart out. It isn’t like the type of work she made was some kind of big secret.

If she wanted a pretty portrait to hang over a fireplace why the Retirement taichI plan shirt but in fact I love this hell did she commission an artist who by that point was already world renowned for her depictions of suffering and pain. She is not the type of artist who was going to paint a nice little portrait. What she did produce was a genuinely great painting which is also what she was known for. If she wasn’t going to make what she was comissioned to do, she should have done the honest thing and refused the job. That would have been artistic integrity. This is a total lack of integrity. She disliked Luce but sucked up for the connections and cachet of being associated with her. Luce was a hard line right wing capitalist. pretty much everything Kahlo and her ilk opposed. She wanted a painter, not an artist. Don’t hire Frida Kahlo, then. Sis doesn’t fuck around with her muse. The most badass, passionate and utterly unapologetic woman subsumed by her art that I have come across in my entire lifetime.
