Healthcare is another factor: USA spends a lot more than eurozone, but this is a bit inflated due to healthcare being more comparitably more expensive in the Pokemon Mew Shirt besides I will buy this USA (universal healthcare, as most eurozone countries have, is more efficiënt for the same amount of money). I often mention to colleagues and friends here that most US companies have learned to look at software as a profit center long ago, while most EU companies look at it as a cost center and this is one of the big reasons why we’ve been struggling to keep up for ages. It’s also taboo to imply that software engineers have it much better over in the US, because “muh healthcare”, “muh school shootings”, etc etc. Even WLB is a false argument most of the time because a lot of Belgians are workaholics who work themselves to death for scraps (most of their wage goes to the state). It IS possible to have a very good WLB if you actually stand up for it, though. I have about 35 days PTO off a year and work an average of 35hrs a week. And it’s nice walking into almost any store and being able to grab high quality products for cheap, café culture, etc.

As an American who travels a lot for work this is the Pokemon Mew Shirt besides I will buy this one that I notice the most. Whether it’s a grocery store or a restaurant, in other places (to include Europe but also others) I can always get way better stuff for moderately less money than dogshit quality in the US. Ackshually, the United States is not the most litigious country and it’s not significantly more than most developed countries Compared to what? That’s is an over-simplification. I’ll just give my example (obviously anecdotal, but to show you it’s not that easy). In the US, my gross salary (after taxes) was 4500 USD/month. Then I moved to the EU, and now my gross salary is 3500/month. From the 4500 in the US, I paid 1200 rent, 1300 family health insurance, 1000 in car payments, 200 crèche, 150 internet, plus water, electricity, petrol, car repair etc. From my 4500/month I usually had about 500 left (in a good month). In the new city in the EU, healthcare and childcare is already included in my taxes, mortgage is 1200, we don’t need a car, public transport for my entire family is 300/month. Water, electricity and gas is about 400. Internet 100. Now I have about 1500 left of my monthly gross salary, sometime 2000. Plus 30 days paid vacation and 2 years parental leave are priceless and cannot be quantified with money So where was I paid higher? Gross salary wise in the US. But I had so much higher expenses there, I am effectively paid 3 times as much in the EU, while having less gross salary on paper. Yeah sure. My life in the US in a somewhat average place (1200 rent in the US is not that much) was more expensive than my lifestyle in one of the more expensive urban areas of the EU.
