I recently got two letters from students. A colleague did a similar thing in her 10th grade English class (foreign language, we’re in Germany). They had to write to their favorite teacher. I got two notes from two students, both in my German class (basically language arts) that said that they liked how much I support them and try to help them. I teach the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this 10th grade “G Kurs” which means it’s an academically underachieving course (we split up who gets what, so everyone has a mix and not everyone has all G Kurse since those are much harder to plan for than the rigorous E Kurse). I’ll help them after graduation if they reach out (I have seniors, I give them a way to contact me if they need references and didn’t suck)
Pig Punk Shirt description
I deal with Hogh Schoolers. I figure if they like me, that’s a sign I’m doing something wrong. What they want and what they need are very nearly polar opposites. A lot of those types of teachers literally need their students to love them because they’ve alienated their family. They get to pretend to be kooky loving motherly types when their own children know them as emotionally abusive narcos. I agree. Everyone’s favorite teacher at my school never made them work (we shared a wall, so I heard a lot, and it wasn’t teaching). She was also way too involved in their lives because they would gossip with her all hour. I can see the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this appeal for teens. Most popular sixth grade teacher is definitely the one with the highest standards at my school. It varies. It isn’t so much if they make them do work or not imo.
I worked my ass off for my first 9 years. I was nominated for teacher of the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this year often but never won. I was very closed off from the gossip of the school. I just did my job, never took off, had high test scores and happy kids. Did this all in 3rd grade. I had a principal who gave out a candle monthly as an award to a staff member. The candle had that stupid “teaching is like a candle, burn yourself out for others” quote. I am glad I never got it, I would have ranted about that quote in front of the shown staff, and I’ve lasted longer at my school than most the teachers who were given that candle. This is what gets me about all the popular social media teachers who parrot this nonsense: None of them are actually in teaching any more. Like, yep, good for you; you didn’t burn out though, just doused your flame in the Kool-Aid. At first, I was like, “Awesome! Someone to show the world what it’s really like and how hard this job is.” I don’t think a single one I followed with that hope are still teaching.

Bugs the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this snot out of me to see the student teachers/young teachers in my building actively endorsing this horse shit, too. One of them has been bending over backwards to build a positive relationship with a kid who is on his last chance at our school. Kid has lied to her every day, stolen stuff out of her purse, spouted racist slurs at the minority students day in and day out, yet when he comes to her pissed off because he, “didn’t get lunch because they put him in lunch detention for no reason” she defends him. Literally happened last week. The kid was caught using the n-word with a hard r in reference to an African American student. He knew he was in the wrong. More than that, if she had just bothered to ask, she would have learned he was offered lunch in lunch detention. He just didn’t eat it. She’s so ready to defend this kid that she’s willing to overlook him using slurs on a daily basis to do it. He’s done it to our staff who happen to be minorities, too, in her presence, and she excuses it because “it’s her job to build a relationship with him.” She’s got a chip on her shoulder about every singe member of staff’s perceived racism and sexism and homophobia, but that kid wants to call the gay teacher an f-word? Meh, let it slide. She’s gotta give him grace because he has a bad home life. She’s gotta be the one willing to throw that starfish back in the sea. She’s got what it takes to make a difference in that kid’s life and it is her job, nay, her mission to turn him around… By endorsing every bad choice he makes.
No, that kid is on his last chance here and your job is to make him get his work done. He had two and a half years of chances to turn things around before you. All the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this magical little research anecdotes that come out of higher academia aren’t worth a hill of beans to the experience of knowing when and where to draw the line at “saving kids.” Some kids just need to learn the hard way. This jerk is one of them. I’ve never heard that line before, I hate it. So toxic! I would be so deeply offended if my boss gave that to me. I’m being a bit sarcastic with my version of it. The actual quote is “A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.” Your reward will be when you are out and about in a few years and you see a former student who is successful. That being said, successful is a relative term.
It’s a job. Haven’t you been to teacher retirements? They get a small plaque and 2-minute speech at my school. The best teacher to ever retire and the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this shitty teacher we were surprised to see renewed every year. And if they had the same level of education, they were making exactly the same pay and retirement. I have an apple shaped paperweight on my kitchen windowsill as a thanks for 40 years of teaching. Of much greater value to me are the times I was asked to write a letter of recommendation for a job, college, or internship, invitations to a wedding or graduation, or just little notes of appreciation. Hang onto those! And if you burn out completely and leave, you get nothing. Not even a “hey, how are you doing?” or “sorry we sucked away your will to live for over a decade and you have nothing left to give” or – anything. Staying forever will get you the 2 minute speech and party with snacks, maybe. Start to enjoy the little notes, valentine cards, kids smiling at you or saying thank you. Everything else is just a token. I am not even aware when it is ‘teacher appreciation day” unless I happen to go to a business that has a discount. I don’t look for that stuff, because it doesn’t fill the hole and never will. When they talk about ‘relationship building’ as a means of being a more effective teacher, don’t be fooled that it is about strategy. That’s what you have left to say ‘hey, I was good at this and I did what I set out to do’ when there is nothing else. Actual gratitude is something you feel, not something they bestow on you.
Yeah for real. I have the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this most preps and was in the middle of a well run class debate followed by practice essay grading when I got a surprise observation today followed by a message that I got a “grow” rather than a “glow.” Nothing else mattered other than that my lesson plan wasn’t complete online. Dumbass principal doesn’t know my subjects and has nothing to contribute other than that. The teachers who work all weekend at home doing paperwork are more than welcome to teacher of the year. I’m an introvert IRL so I try to be recognized as little as possible. If so, just a little, “Thanks for teaching me,” at the end of the year is enough. I tend to get those from time to time, but if you’re not a high school teacher, you’ll probably never get that. Kids just don’t develop empathy before that age, normally .
In my school it is a badge of honor. Usually the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this “teacher of the year” as chosen by the students is always…the first year teacher they all walk over! Me and two or three of the “tough” teachers never get anything from the students but a well-earned grade and a good push on their educational journey. As a building we don’t do teacher of the year by the staff but instead after your 5th, 10th, etc. year in the building we honor them and admin gives a little extra cash. In 17 years, I’ve written grants for tens of thousands of dollars, started district-wide programs, and developed curriculum used by my fellow teachers across the district and never been celebrated for it. You know what I do get? Students coming back after graduating and catching up with me, invited to weddings and told that I was what helped when a student wanted to commit suicide and didn’t because of how I treated them, run into in the mall and given excited hugs.
When I moved from the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this middle school I taught at for nine years and to the district’s alternative high school, I was met by a small group of students I’d taught before that were happy to see me and worked harder in my class, which helped them graduate. One of my students from when I taught elementary school in now on our local MLS team and I own his first signed & framed jersey. We caught up on the pitch a few times before games and I was able to congratulate him on a job well done and the hard work he’s put in to get to the level he’s at now. I’m a male teacher in year 15 myself and feel the same way. I don’t think I’ve ever received an award for teaching, but I have had students reach out years later after they’ve been in my class, wanting to catch up or just say “thank you”. I teach abroad but that’s irrelevant. I know I haven’t always been the best teacher in the past, and have failed with some kids, but the ones that remember and see me when they pick up their younger sibling like to chat a bit.
Even my current students, who are K-6, like to chat and for the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this youngest ones, just play a bit. That’s what I like because I know the impact that has on them. The teacher of the year for my DISTRICT is a dude, at my school actually (dude deserves it, but he is the theater teacher, so I feel like he has a few breaks that other teachers don’t get). I rarely get recognized by students or staff, but my position is unusual (formerly new social studies teacher, now unwilling avid elective teacher and coordinator). Honestly, I’d rather the anonymity currently because I am leaving my district this year for another that will hopefully allow me to actually teach what I studied to teach. You’re only in your fifth year. You have a long career ahead of you and hopefully you will receive an acknowledgement of your dedication and talents in the future, but it’s not particularly helpful to dwell on things that amount to a popularity contest. I am a male teacher as well. It is often difficult to disentangle how students respond to your gender from other aspects of yourself.
It’s so tough. The kids obviously need a male role model and I’m happy to provide it but it bothers meHonestly the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this best accolade you can receive, is when you see a grown adult, acting like you are a movie star…you will be in a dazed confusion…and then this adult will say…Mr…so and so, it’s me…(the thousands of lives you’ve influenced)..and you’ll say…wow…you’re driving now…or you’re doing whatever adult thing the former student is doing..and then you realized you’ve made your mark on the world. This happens a lot and you’re right. I saw two kids at the grocery store that told their coworkers I was the best teacher. he thousands of lives you’ve influenced)..and you’ll say…wow…you’re driving now…or you’re doing whatever adult thing the former student is doing..and then you realized you’ve made your mark on the world. Agreed…..Your impact will often go unseen…..A lot of students as expected can be self absorbed and don’t realize the impact until they are given perspective. Know that what you do is changing the lives of kids in ways you will not realize. I’m sure there are students in your classroom that have really rough homelives…and your consistency may be the only thing in their life…those kids usually don’t broadcast that.
Teacher of the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this year is a popularity contest, and means absolutely nothing. I’ve never seen the best teachers get chosen, as they choose to spend their work time focusing on students, and not inserting themselves into others’ gossip and drama. I recommend to stop caring about that fake award. As a male with almost 2 decades experience- I can say that the students who NEED you there as a stable male person in their lives are also rarely the ones to get involved and nominate anyone for anything. But, without you there for them they’d struggle. The best recognition is from individual students. They’ll let you know, sometimes subtly. Never doubt that. Kids know sincerity and care when they see it. I’m a male teacher, 11 years into special education at the middle school level. 6 years ago I got teacher of the year. Also 6 years ago I was 1 of 2 RSP teachers at a school of 1300 students. Half way through the year the other RSP teacher quit, leaving me to fly solo. I had 37 on my caseload that year, held 23 triennial assessments + 14 regular IEPs, taught 3 different grade levels of remedial math, and pushed into two classes of co-taught math with one prep period.
What did I get from all this? My name stamped into a two inch brass plate posted on a wall at a district I no longer work for which I’m pretty sure I got voted for out of sympathy because my job was shit that year and I did the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this best I could with cards I was dealt. But more importantly, I got perspective. I’d rather see kids make progress and come to terms with their learning goals than them like me and vote to be their favorite. And I sure as shit, don’t give a flying fuck about teacher of the year anymore. Like others have said, student-based teacher recognition generally goes to the teacher with the big personality who lets kids screw around. I’m fine with this as I hear directly from kids and families how I impact them and there’s real value in kids having relationships with different kinds of adults. What I’ll add is that colleague-based recognition often feels unbalanced and political. I swear I don’t expect my peers to thank me for doing my job, but it gets frustrating when it’s the same handful of people who are always thanked/awarded and you’re instructed to applaud. More than once I’ve been told to applaud someone else for work I either collaborated with them on or full on just did myself. You also notice how celebrations and care aren’t equally extended. Some people get meal trains and gift cards when they’re experiencing illness or loss, while others don’t even get a condolence card. Likewise, some get baby showers, others get squat.
I’m not gonna lie, this has not been my experience. But it might be the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this grades I teach. I’m a man teaching elementary school so everyone fucking loves me. I’m like a unicorn. Do what you want to do to satisfy the curriculum and your own integrity, but don’t ever expect anything in return or even anyone to notice. The faster you acknowledge that, the happier you will be. Having your name called and getting a round of applause at a faculty meeting is literally meaningless; you don’t get paid more, your job doesn’t get easier, you don’t get a free vacation, it’s just people golf-clapping and saying “yup, he’s a teacher too!” Don’t lose focus of what you do. If you enjoy the way you run your class, and it’s working, that’s worth more than being recognized for it. If you can show up to work and make it through a day, a week, a month or even a whole school year without dreaming of quitting, you’re way ahead of most of us. Having someone tell you you’re doing a great job shouldn’t factor in to how you feel about the job. Here’s a quick example: I work with a teacher who won the Milken award. She got $20k and the goddamn commissioner of education was there and we had a massive assembly. Go ahead and google the Milken family, and their history. This is one of the biggest awards and forms of recognition you can get as a teacher, and…look where that financial award is coming from. These people are worth billions of dollars, but thanks for the $20k that you probably used to launder your money anyways, I guess?
Just saying. Recognition as a teacher is not always what it seems. Keep doing what you do for yourself and for your students, and block out all the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this other stuff, because that lack of recognition that you crave right now will eventually cause you to resent the entire profession – because it’s never coming. Let me tell you a little story… I remember wanting to be teacher of the year. One year I was determined. I participated in EVERY SINGLE COMMITTEE. I volunteered to chaperone any and all after school events. All my stuff was in on time or early. Came in early. Stayed late. Anyone needed anything and I was all over it. Kids were in a design challenge and I showed them how to use 3D modeling software to make virtual models (this was back in 2010 so kind of a bigger deal). I would offer feedback when asked, volunteered to be the PTA liaison, and served on the admittance committee to the school. Went to any PD and turn-keyed it. Then when the kids were upset their field trip got canceled because of weather (snow) I organized another one, fund raised thousands of dollars for it myself, and got it approved (overnight to DC). I implemented a student of the month initiative, and pretty much did every single thing I could think of to stand out and make the biggest impact I could. Day of the announcement comes and I’m all excited. The principal goes onto say this person has really made a big impact and stepped up this year yada yada yada. The whole time I’m like… this is me… omg this is me. Then she reads someone else’s name. Now I’m crushed but I’m like… ok maybe this other person did a lot too… I’m sure I’m not the only one… other people do a lot too.
Cut to 2 weeks later. A student in my class has a green ball, a little bigger than a boccii ball he is throwing from hand to hand. I walk over and ask him to stop. Then I look at it and ask where he got it from. Turns out he was in a class and the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this teacher in that class doesn’t actually teach anything, so he’s been taking rolls of electrical tape every day for months and making this ball bigger and bigger and bigger. In class… just sitting there… making it bigger and bigger and bigger, apparently out in the open. Every day he just shows up, takes it out of his bag, and wraps it more and more. Take a guess which teachers class this is? That’s right… teacher of the year. The student likes me so he offers it to me (I think he thought he was going to get in trouble if he didn’t) so I take it to another teacher in my department. I show it to her and explain and then I’m asked her why on earth he got teacher of the year…
Turns out the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this principal forgot to get a rep for a district level committee. Teacher of the year had off last period and took a nap in his van, over slept, and forgot to sign out and collect his check from his mailbox. He went in, she saw him and asked him to volunteer for one committee… and boom a teacher of the year is born. The moral of the story is… don’t feel too bad. It could just come down to someone walking into the office at the right time and the principal needing a name to write on the paperwork. I know a school where the teachers who are chosen for appreciation are always males… the ones who were in the same fraternity as the principal lol Only about 25% of teachers are male in the United States. What percentage of teachers get chosen for the thing you’re talking about?
At least in the Pig Punk Shirt Apart from…,I will love this US, male public school teachers earn between 10 to 13 percent more than their female counterparts. Just, you know, while we’re on the topic of the difference between the appreciation male and female teachers are given. Back to making the kids the focus and knowing I’m making a difference with or without the awards. Awards aren’t my why. Thank you all for helping me find it again. Don’t stack yourself up against other teachers — they might be the teacher of the year, but who knows if they’re the best teacher. Focus on yourself! Good luck!! My predecessor was known throughout the building as “Mama Lastname” and frequently had admin praise and a cabinet full of awards for various concerts and events. Children would come for hot tea, blankets, and some cookies if she had some that day.
