He then went on to win his first Grammy later that year. I’m always so surprised and in awe when we get to have him perform.” Ahead of the show, Gary Clark Jr. spoke of the preparations he’s been making to ready his Texas Hill Country home for the virtual event. (He explains there will be lights and a fog machine in action.) As for vocal prep, he jokes he’s been “taking singing in the shower a little more seriously.” The perpetually behatted musician—who has earned multiple Grammys for his bluesy soul songs—continued to say that he misses playing at Surf Lodge, but the scrappy resourcefulness required to put on a compelling virtual concert brings him back to his early days on the road when he was doing everything on his own. “There’s nothing like playing outside during sunset at Surf Lodge; there’s no better feeling than that. I’ve been fortunate to play large venues, but one thing that lacks is the feeling of connection you get playing house parties and small blues clubs. People are so close that, if I’m not careful, I could whack someone in the head with my guitar. But doing this virtual concert, I don’t have my guitar tech with me and I’m just doing this all on my own like I used to—lugging my own gear around and just trying to make it happen.”
