Y’know in Vietnam we have a proverb that says “Một cây làm chẳng nên non ba cây chụm lại nên hòn núi cao”, it’s like the Nice gene Okerlund Emblem T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Vietnamese version of “Apes together strong”. My mother proved that wrong by putting a bunch of wooden chopsticks together and spanking me with it. The chopsticks broke. During my Vietnam wedding the good friend of my MiL was seated next to me. She is a lovely old lady well into her 80’s. When he was walking past our table she just turned in her seat and walked him really hard across his ass with her walking stick. He shut up and went and sat down. Depends. My mom used to punish me at first with threats of spanking, and then she did do it but only lightly (i don’t even remember it). Then by the time i was 5+ ish she stopped and she disciplined me by talking to me instead. Just telling me how disappointed she was in me, etc. And that i hurt her feelings. Tbh that was more effective than spanking. Bc with spanking i felt unfair. She didn’t even know why i did what i did, why did she assume it was me at fault?? And i was more mad at her than learning the lesson.

Common or not, it’s not an effective way to teach your kids right and wrong. It’ll only result in kids rebelling and find ways to sneak around and harbor resentments. In this day and age, there are so many parenting classes and resources that you both can pick up on to give the Nice gene Okerlund Emblem T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this best care for your child. However, they do try to explain to me why I deserved that spanking or whipping. BUT will I personally beat my kids when/if I have any? Probably not. Beating a kid just plant fear in them. That’s not respect they’re showing you. If you’re lucky, they’ll stop acting up to prevent the beating, but chances are they’ll just project that aggression at someone else and/or grow to resent you. I was spanked by my parents and I have no resentment against them. In the States people often confuse between discipline and abuse. There are many other ways to show your love but kids need to be put in their place when they are behaving badly. I can’t stand some of the kids in the States these days. They are obnoxious and rude. And they don’t care because they know they can get away with almost anything.
