I know a lot of schools are pushing to go back to using phonics to teach reading which is how I learned basic reading and was an avid reader as a child. So this is very worrying and I’m not trying to make light of it, but also I now feel better that back in 10th grade half of my Honors US History class couldn’t spell, “Massachusetts” despite living in said state(I was not one of them btw. I’m a weirdly good speller for some reason, which I attribute to having read a lot as a kid). Been hearing half the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this general public say this exact thing for about 4ish so years now at least. Kinda behind the curve, but after all what can we expect from the teachers teaching the children that are this far behind. I would like to say on the other side of things, I have seen people in their 40s and up guilty of a lot of this. Pretty much all the math stuff at least. Watching a lady type in 5.00-3.95 on a calculator 5x a day for change years ago triggered me daily
Miss Monique Love Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater, long sleeve tee
I teach 9th grade English. I don’t think I have a single student who more than 80% of the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this time uses capital letters correctly, punctuates sentences, uses commas, and spells basic words correctly. They are all extremely extremely behind, and I’m having to play catch up while also trying to get them at grade level so that they can pass the state standardized test in April and actually move on to 10th grade. Today I taught “how to write a simple sentence”. The kids were STRUGGLING with it. They cannot answer basic comprehension or analysis questions. It’s a huge problem. The kids are getting passed up grade after grade even though they are so far behind. I don’t know what the answer is, but in 2 years these kids will be graduating high school barely having a 9th grade reading level because it took all 4 years of high school to bring them up from 4th grade to 9th grade level. I have kids turning in clearly AI written papers without changing a single thing to make the paper at least fit the rubric or the assignment. They will turn in a 5 page paper using SAT words with no spelling or grammatical errors when I only asked them to write 4 paragraphs and I know that they had 99 errors on their rough draft they wrote in class because ummm… I graded them! And students do NOT improve that fast.. When they are confronted about it, they swear up and down that they didn’t use AI, and threaten to get us fired if we call their parents. They genuinely think teachers are stupid or technologically illiterate or something.
I think a lot of the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this “gaps” we’re seeing as gen ed teachers are actually tied to the shift toward inclusion models. Sometimes I see posts like this and wonder if the students being referenced are the same students who would have been in a separate classroom 15 years ago. I have a huge range of abilities in my classroom but it’s not because those students didn’t exist in the past they just wouldn’t have been in my class. So I’m hesitant to claim it’s gotten worse when it has possibly just become more visible. What a lovely old age we will have. These, and their children, are the people that will, supposedly, fund future pension systems (which will be non existent I knoe) At least in my district. I’m a high English school teacher. We are seeing a lot of kids come from the elementary school with serious issues. We have tried to work with the elementary school to put curriculum maps together to try and blend them with the high schools but it seems like it always turns into a blame game and it’s very frustrating. So when I get a 7th grader he or she can barely even string a sentence together let alone know the 8 parts of speech. I teach writing and it’s very challenging to get a complete sentence out of these kids. Let alone a 5 sentence paragraph. I have trouble just getting them to read the directions at the top of the page. I just feel at this point that the problem just gets passed onto the high school. I know I am generalizing here. When I went to elementary school in the the early 90s. I remember it being very different.

For bullet point 2 – Go have a look at A Pickle for the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this Knowing Ones by Timothy Dexter. Don’t read it, just skim the first page or two then go to the end.. Not a teacher but I see this first hand in my cousin. She is in college to become a teacher (ironic) and she struggles to write grammatically correct sentences. While there are obvious drops since COVID, long term trends show that among children that don’t drop out there is a basically steady set of understanding in reading and math. Yes, there are children that are neglected by their parents and have no interest in learning. No, it is not consistent with overall trends. While there is a problem, do not try to scaremonger that children these days are imbeciles compared to prior generations. Overall they scored higher until COVID.
Have us millennials just failed at parenting? I feel like we got shat on when we were younger for but I also felt like we were aiming to be better parents than the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this boomers were? Mid year in Social Studies I do historical fiction research papers. The results have been scary. The kids can’t write. If they are so behind why are teachers letting them go on to the next grade ?? Why aren’t more kids repeating grades ? Point 1, 2, and 3 I can personally attest to. People in my grade were so, so, so, so bad with literacy. Like, God almighty. In a college level course (I mean, we were getting actual college credit for this, straight up we were technically registered students at a university for taking this course) people struggled with 1 page essays. Our teacher assigned us a 3-5 page final (in senior year, in a college level course) and so many people complained and turned in a 2 page paper.
Point 4 I might have some issue with. Depends entirely on context. If you specifically asked them to do it in their heads to test if they could, then there’s absolutely an issue. But personally I used my calculator for everything in highschool math. It was a lot simpler to just calculate everything on it so I could use the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this calculator faster. (I’m too tired to come up with a complex equation), but for example let’s use (2+2)*10 (obviously I can do this in my head, but like I said, I’m tired) I would still use the calculator on the 2+2 so I can just hit the times button and do 10. In highschool level maths, this would be much easier as you’re doing so much stuff, you’d slow yourself down if you did things in your head and have to clear your calculator and manually update it.
Point 5, I personally don’t know my full multiplication tables, probably definitely an issue. But in all fairness, I was homeschooled during those years and my parents never bothered to make sure I memorized them, so long as I understood what multiplication was. By the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this time I got to public school, I was in highschool so like, no reason for me to learn it when I’m using a calculator yknow? The rest of the points are definitely issues, and I can personally attest to the fact that my peers have 0 clue on how to do that stuff. Especially following patterns. I bring attention to that cause I’m in college now, studying a social science, which is all about learning patterns and theories and applying it. So I definitely know what that looks like, and I can safely say that a vast majority of the people I graduated with either could not or would not do that. If I may interject with my belief on why this is. I certainly do not think it is the teachers fault. In all my experiences with teachers, they have been very adamant in pushing the students to do better.
It’s absolutely due to the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this school system pushing students through that really shouldn’t be pushed through. This let the parents be lazy and not reinforce skills at home. All they saw was that their kid would graduate anyways, so they stopped caring. This lead to kids being less prepared in higher grades due to being pushed through, which lead to higher ups lowering requirements (like I mentioned, my final in a college level course was 3 pages. Sorry, but a senior should be able to write 3 pages regularly, that shouldn’t be for a final), which lead to even less prepared students, leading to requirements getting lowered. At home, young kids weren’t learning the skills, so they lowered the requirements at lower grades too. Which had the same effect.
It’s a vicious cycle and it pains me so much to see it’s effects with my peers. I truly tried to believe that people are on average much smarter than we think. But after seeing everybody in my senior class graduate, people who absolutely should’ve failed, I really don’t think they are. And it’s so, so sad. I left a sub plan for my students with an old reading guide and class set of textbooks. (I’m over them abusing the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this Chromebooks to goof around so I wanted the give the sub something where kids had no excuse to have them out) I had two separate emails from parents mad I had their students read a text book (one called it boring) and their kids shouldn’t be punished for not completing the fill in the blank packet after 3h across two class sizes. This book is used by our state for 8th graders…. These are juniors and their parents claiming it’s too hard to read. Honestly I’d bet the book is even low level for 8th graders…
This shit always cracks me up. I am 26 years old now. Most of my friends are pretty smart. But every so often I encounter someone who doesn’t know really basic shit. I remember talking to a friend about Paris, France and after the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this conversation was done they asked “I wonder what part of the U.S. Paris is in”. I was absolutely FLOORED. I had to go on a 30 minute to explain to them that the world was made made up of different countries. I wish that was even the tip of the tip of the iceberg with how bad the U.S. education system is. 100% this. I have worked as a mental health therapist in school, the community, and now with the Department of Juvenile Corrections. Kids are delayed in academics, critical thinking, and are under-socialized. I do not know if COVID attributed to this, but I do know the students who were not engaged by parental figures during COVID have significant behavioral, critical thought, cognitive, and academic delays.
All they want to do is hang out and socialize. As a whole they seem to have very little drive to accomplish much of anything. And this is why I was homeschooled… I finished my whole high-school education in 2 and a half years and not to boast at all.. But just objectively I find myself more intellectual than my public schooled peers. College staff here – been tutoring students who don’t know number of months in a year or inches in a foot. But those are just facts they can learn. Same boat. Your point on research skills is 100% accurate and will be shared with my colleagues. Thank you for expressing our frustration so well. I was concerned that they don’t seem to understand how line graphs show the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this relationship between the x-axis and y-axis. I get lines that go nowhere and don’t connect to points. When I ask them why they drew it, they just shrug. It’s like “fake it ’til you make it” on day one in a foreign country. What in your professional opinion is the cause of this, and what can we as parents do to prevent this with our own kids? I think a lot of this also has to do with the new ways of teaching. Instead of teaching phonics, my kids are being taught sight words, and how to memorize specific words. Which is fine, but I think phonics need to be taught alongside it. Also, the new way of doing math is literally the most stupid stuff I’ve ever seen in my life, and as a parent who has been trying to learn the new way they’re teaching kids math, it’s more confusing than the old way. Everyone knows. The largest public school in my home town has a <20% pass rate on the national math and English assessments.
Ask yourself what changed from when things DID work. What looks different, what sounds different, what kind of things are teachers being told to handle that they weren't before. What happens to children who disrupt learning in the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this classroom now, and what happened twenty, thirty years ago? I’m asking you to be honest with yourself in observing these things, to trust the evidence of your own eyes, ears, and experiences, and to not let people who are NOT in your position tell you what to believe or to brush off your concerns. Trust the evidence of your eyes and ears and you will find the truth of why the education system has failed the United States. High school math teacher. I can’t do grade level math with my students. They’re incredibly academically behind. It’s sad. A bit terrifying. But they’re also socially and emotionally behind. These high schoolers are like elementary schoolers in terms of behavior. Except with hormones and colorful language. I’m burnt out by these post-Covid years and am EAGERLY counting down the days until I leave the profession. They’re not just dumb…. they’re brutally mean and unempathetic people. my Mrs teaches down here in aust, she says kids are coming into high school, 13 years old, who can’t count to 10. can’t even apply basic maths like working the total if you say I went to the supermarket and got 4 apples, 3 bananas and 2 oranges. Even when she says use your fingers to count they still have trouble. and this fucking stupid idea of inclusion, so she has 10 kids with learning issues in a class of normal kids, 11 different lessons she has to teach in one class…
doesn’t help she is also the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this only qualified maths teacher in the school to teach the hard stuff to kids about to leave for uni. and shes had enough. already handed in her resignation for the end of this year to give the school enough time to find another qualified maths teacher. Preschool. They are focused on my daughter getting along with kids. They told me they don’t even care about her academics. I pay $900 a month. They do all the gentle parenting stuff. And have girls in their early 20s helping with the class. Idk what to do. I work all day. I keep my daughter at home days I don’t work. I get all these messages about how she’s awful in class. I’m not ignorant, but she doesn’t get away with acting like that at home. I teach drums in a music center, based in South East Asia. I have a 14 year old student who needs to stick out his thumb and index finger on both hands every time I mention the words ‘right’ and/or ‘left’ to figure out which is which. The kid goes to an expensive private school.
I’m a OT and I desperately feel like I can’t really help anyone because of the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this academic barriers. I usually get referrals for handwriting but kids don’t know their letters, sounds, or how to write independently so what am I supposed to do? They struggle with reading too. Our district has a program with a mere 20 kids who are considered to be the lowest of the low with academics. But I have a hard time believing they are the only ones. Do you have a classroom of 10-12 kids? Do you have an education in, education? As in, you have a full-on degree in it. Not a degree in your subject. How are kids supposed to be educated to a high standard when the school system is run by people that ignore the basic guidelines for how to teach? There’s a teachers union, but they aren’t concerned with the quality of education.
Who do you think is responsible for educating the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this populace? The parents included. The actual educators have to take responsibility for making sure the schools are properly funded. They have to take responsibility for making sure parents understand how to be parents as soon as they know they’re pregnant. This isn’t a “blame the teachers” rant, this is pointing out how reality actually works. The educators are responsible for the quality of education in society. The medical practitioners are responsible for the level of health in society. The problems with these ‘industries’ is solely the morality of the individuals that occupy the positions. I feel like with proper testing 90 percent of students would “qualify” for an IEP under the same standards I had to qualify for one back when I went to school in the 90s. Testing for grade advancement needs to be established at every grade level. Maybe every other grade. Test at the end of the academic year. You can’t pass the test, congrats! You’re now a 15 year old 3rd grader.
I can already hear the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this parents screaming about it, but too bad. I’m pretty sure students would get serious about school very quickly. To be fair to the index finger kids, they can still make unorthodox styles like that work. I type with the pinky, middle finger, and thumb on my left hand and the middle finger and index finger on my right. When I text on my phone I use the thumb of my left hand and the index finger of my right. I have a 53 wpm on the computer and a 45 wpm on my phone. We had a program in grade school called ‘All The Write Type’ and regardless of how long I used it I could never master the homerow and keeping my hands in place in the middle of the keyboard. So I ended up developing my own style that worked for me and because I never changed it I become proficient with it. As a first year teacher, I went home after the first week feeling like crap. My students didn’t understand simple things that they should have clearly have understood by now, they kept telling me my lessons were too hard….I was considering other careers. Thought I was just terrible at teaching. Then I had a conversation with some other teachers and it’s just the same in all classes. Students are performing 1-2 grades below level and some even 3 grade levels below. It truly is sad.
Ok. First off I absolutely adore teachers. Y’all are the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this backbone of society and I really mean that. I put like almost all of this on the parents. Having said that. It’s hard for me to read this thread and not think to myself “what the hell were the previous teachers teaching if their students don’t know basic information” Now, again, I place the vast vast majority of this on parents. It’s truly despicable to allow your children to fall that far behind and be that inept. But again; the previous years teachers HAVE to shoulder at least some of the blame here. Right? I’m flabbergasted at most of these reply’s. 2005 baby here and holy mother of god. How do people not know these things? Teachers have a union. Dont strike. Just grade the kids according to the standards. Let the administrators deal with the policies. Bright side: data from my district shows literally a double in some categories. Those coming up should presumably have less deficits. When I was teaching sex ed (admittedly 15 years ago, I’m a doctor now) I remember parents signing consent forms with an “x.” I called to verify they actually consented. They were so illiterate they couldn’t sign their own names. This was in NYS. If the parents are this bad off I’m not sure what’s fair to expect of the children. I’ll never forget my Algebra 2 class. This was in my sophomore year, hybrid covid, 2020-2021. All the math courses I took in high school were the highest level available to me, but my Algebra 2 class was a very large class combined with intermediate algebra students, it was very clearly one of those courses designed to let students pass for free so they could graduate.
It was explained to us that the Miss Monique Love Shirt also I will do this only difference between the two was that Algebra 2 students would take the regents exam at the end of the year for their credit, and intermediate students would not. But covid canceled all state mandated exams, so it was decided that we would all just take Intermediate Algebra course content wise, but we would each get our respective credits for what we signed up for. The intermediate students struggled a lot on the most basic concepts, and many just didn’t care whatsoever. With 1 month left in the school year we were told the entire rest of the class would be dedicated to a credit recovery period, anybody that was currently failing the class could take short (<10 questions) topic quizzes to pass each unit and pass the class regardless of current grade, open note, open everything, suddenly oh look, everyone's passing!
