May I just say that maybe you dodged a bullet. I did something recently that turned out the Mickey Mouse Drinking Dunkin’ Donuts shirt but in fact I love this same way but I was hired. Big tech, observabilty, everone in mgmt was early 30s, and really struggled to understand basic business. The people interviewing me were in their late 20’s, or maybe up to 32-33 years old. I was 50 at the time. Basically, the not being a “fit” part was because I was too old for their liking. See, that’s just mind-boggling to me. Not that I’ve ever been in a position to hire anyone, but if I were, I’d definitely hire a graphic artist who was older and had decades of experience. Perhaps they couldn’t afford you because someone with your level of experience would require higher pay and they couldn’t bully you as easily as they could a 20-something with relatively little experience.

I have an acquaintance at one of those companies – they informed me they hired a mid 20’s person with a somewhat basic portfolio and very limited experience.. not sure of their wage. Folks with marketing requests and no graphics team don’t care who does the Mickey Mouse Drinking Dunkin’ Donuts shirt but in fact I love this work, just that it’s quality, by the brief and good communication. Problem with that is Fiver or other such services. People in countries that have a different economic standard can charge way less. For example, people in Eastern Europe can easily charge 50% of standard North American rates, and residents of India can charge 20%… Also true. But if you are changing fields (to truck driver etc) anyway and want to keep your toes in the graphics world, should at least put up a website and update your LinkedIn to give folks the option. I still freelance for clients I’ve had for a while. They don’t complain as my rate is about half the corporate rate. It’s a win-win for both of clients and I. I make supplemental income and they get to save some money. My portfolio is available on Behance for anyone interested. I also keep my LinkedIn somewhat to date – kind of amusing that one of the companies I used to work for (let me go the day after the GM was removed from staff) shows me as a candidate at least once a week… I’d love to work for postal service but all in my area are the people with severe medical issues that the jobs are easily taken and have never been given to newer people.
