I don’t think you should hold onto the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this idea of the “american dream” and such, since you in Georgia and in a small town no less, i recommend when you able to move out, try moving to a bigger city like Atlanta where there a bigger Vietnamese community, you might feel more at home with like minded people around. It probably will never be the same as when you were back home but it still better than feeling like a alien in your new home. Take sometime to reflect on your current situation and see if you could adapt to your new life, if you really thing that life in the US isn’t for you, i say it perfectly reasonable for you to return to Vietnam and start a new life back home again. It might not have the same opportunity America might offer you but it certainly still better than the feeling of being on edge all the time.

Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater, long sleeve tee

I’m a white Australian guy who lived and worked in HCMC for 3 years. I get being homesick from HCMC. I miss it myself. Life in HCMC is fast, hectic, fun, there’s almost no rules compared to countries in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this West, people are always out having dinner and drinks in alfresco dining every night. The seafood is awesome and dirt cheap. You can get anything delivered in a matter of minutes on the back of a bike. It has an awesome energy. People work and live in close proximity to eachother and people are normally of a happy disposition. I remember being stuck in traffic on a motorbike while it was pouring rain. Everyone was stuck out in the rain and just chatting to eachother and seemed completely unfazed. If my phone or wallet was sticking out of my pocket while on my bike I’d get a friendly tap on the shoulder to let me know. In 3 years I never had any problems with theft and was told that I would (there was guy who kept nicking my flip flops that I left outside of my apartment, but aside from that nothing). Although haggling and foreigner prices are definitely a thing haha.
Same as me, I went to the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this US to study, worked there a couple of years and got major depression. So I went back to VN and never been happier. I’m just gonna say I’ve lived in USA my whole life as a viet American, born here and all. Every time I go to vietnam for a vacation, it also reminds me how bad my social life is. The only plus in america is good pay if you work hard for it. My life is trash lol. It’s normal to feel like you do not belong here, when you just live here for couple of months. I live in East Tennessee (North of Georgia, I bet many Viets never heard about it). I’ve been living here for 9 years, and I experienced exactly what you described when I first came. I tried to hide that I am an immigrant because where I live is considered a “white” town. I met rednecks that make slant-eyes and mocking Asian accents in Walmart. I was the only Vietnamese student in my department at uni back in the day, and I always avoided telling people where I was from. One day, I was talking with a teacher about homework, and he asked me if I tried the new Vietnamese restaurant near campus. I suggested he try the “Vietnamese sandwich”, he corrected me and called it “Banh Mi”, and told me how he loved Phở. That moment changed my mind. “I wanted to bring Vietnam to these “white” mf”. I brought Vietnamese coffee to my advisor and co-workers (Ecuadorian, Brazilian, and Turkish). To this day, we still argue about whose has the best coffee (Viet coffee for sure). My “American” friends asking me about Vietnam and send me pictures of them when they go to Asian supermarket (we only have 1 in town) pointing a live “ghẹ”.

You will get along for sure because we are Viets, nothing can hold us back. You will find true friends and people that make you feel comfortable to spend time with them. If your “friends” make you feel insecure and ashamed not only because you are an immigrant or anything, I wouldn’t call them friends. You just started your journey, or the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this “American dream”, it will be hard, it will be challenging. I wish you and your family the best. I want to tell you don’t “try to be white,” be yourself and be #ProudlyMadeInVietnam Before writing this I feel like I war really rushing it, rushing to fit in and adapt but the replies really shows me that it takes time and makes me feel less “lonely” knowing some people relate
Welcome to reality! At least you win that, you just realized how shit the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this west is. The American dream is such a good propaganda program for the American people that even works outside America. It is the same for Europe btw. Try to get used to living there, find some social hobbies to make friends, sports, etc or you are fucked. As a westerner living in Vietnam I can tell you, quality of live is way better here, even if you don’t have a lot of money you can always go out eat something on the street with your friends or even make new ones, Vietnamese people is really friendly people. If you are not ready for going to school/work and then home during the week and going to the mall on weekends for the rest of your live, I suggest you come back to VN where you can go out anytime and enjoy life. I used to be like you years ago when I first arrived to the UK. Living in Saigon for a long time made me feel no other place can be home, even in the middle of stuffed London. My 2 cents for you is keep fighting to fit in the new life, life goes on and people change huh. Someday you will forget the old life, the old you in Vietnam (idk if it’s good or bad); or someday you will be strong enough to choose where you want to live. No matter how your life goes on, keep yourself positive thinking and fight tooth and nail for the future you want. Engaging a new life feel the same as being rejected by your first crush, everything collapse but you have to live and fight. There will be rainbows after the rain, wish you all.
Thanks man, comparing to how I felt when I just got here and now I feel like its a little bit better and im slowly adapting, life does keep going on lol It’s culture shock. You’ll get over it after years. Don’t expect Vietnamese people in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this US are the same like those in Vietnam. You, yourself have to adapt to their way! If staying in the U.S. makes you miserable, then there’s no shame of going back to your motherland. Your health and yourself are more important than other people’s judgements. No good parents would force their children to stay in a uncomfortable environment. Truly know how you feel OP, I’m in similar shoes, from Malaysia though, studying in Canada. Mainly I feel like the people here in US / CA region just don’t hit the same as people back home. Living overseas truly makes you appreciate what you had back then.
I can see that, i also just moved from vn to germany. My 1st 2 months were rough to say the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this least, eventhough i live in a city of 70k people, but its not HCMC man. I miss the noise, the screaming of moms to their kids telling them to do their homework, etc. I am better now since i meet alot of cool people, but still very much miss it. I want you to know that you wont be alone, there will be people coming in to your life that will help you going through these tough times. I wish you the best on your journey ^ I’m a Viet Kieu and my uncle and aunt-in-law (both 1st gen immigrants/former refugees) used to live there; they originally lived here in California but moved there because my aunt-in-law wanted to live closer to her family, but my uncle was miserable there. One of their 2 kids/my cousin didn’t have a great time there either based on what I had heard. The whole family moved back to California as soon as they could. Considering the older cousin (who spent all her elementary school years in Georgia) had a hard time in Georgia even as Viet Kieu, I can’t even imagine what it’s like in Georgia for 1st gen immigrants. This was me when i first moved to the us. i also received a few years of education from an international school, and moved here only a couple years ago. when we moved here i wasnt really sure we were gonna stay, because my mom gave me a bullshit excuse to stay. but now i have friends here and still keep contact with my old friends in vn. so i’d say the best thing to do is keep in contact with your old friends, but also free up your mind and try to blend in. you can also share your experiences from vn, i’m sure some people are interested in asian culture! so best of luck to you and try not to be gloomy too much. it really hurts the mind
Ill eventually adapt I hope but im just ranting to get it out and get advice, I still keep in contact with people from vn and i guess it does really help I’m American, and I had a similar experience when I moved to Vietnam. I can’t even count the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this number of times I wanted to pull my hair out and scream “F*@k this stupid country! I want to go home!” But I lived there 4 years, and cried when I left. I love Vietnam. It’s normal. It’s called culture shock, and it passes. My advise: be yourself, even if it’s hard. It may take longer for people to “get” you, but in the long term you’ll be much happier because the people around you will be the ones who like the real you. I know in Duluth, Buford, Doraville and Lawrenceville all have a decent population of Asians (I think mostly Viets and Koreans.) Just look up Hmart areas and you’ll see Asians. Join Vietnamese-American community of GA on facebook, events are posted there. Your family can venture out to those areas on the weekends. I don’t live in GA, so that’s all I know.
As for the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this American Dream, it is there if you work for it. Pick the right profession, work and invest; then you’ll be set. Once you have established yourself, you’re free to move and live however you like. Visit VN if you can, just don’t give up because you’re missing your childhood. There is no success without sacrifice. What you’re experiencing is quite normal when you live somewhere new long term. People of every race experience the same feelings as you and experience home sickness, friends, and family. I don’t know if you’ve travelled internationally by yourself before but it seems you weren’t prepared mentally for relocating internationally. It’ll take time to make new friends and adjust to your new environment but you should give it a proper shot and try new things. Be adventurous and enjoy your time in a new place instead of expecting the same things as VN. I’m a foreigner who’s been living in HN for over 5 years and I’ve also felt the exact things you have. I’ve been called tây balo, con khỉ, khoái tay, people trying to scam me all thr time etc and also get people staring at me like I’m an alien (all the time), but you just grow thick skin and move on. Don’t waste a good opportunity
I don’t know where you are in GA, but a trip to Buford HWY/Doraville along with some online apps/sites might help you meet you meet people your own age who are either in similar situations or grew up here but in Viet/Asian-American household. yup I do visit Duluth and places with asian communities once everywhile but Idk where to find people my age since I dont want to date but just to be friend Move to Houston, largest Vietnamese population outside of California for half the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this cost , good schools and a massive city If your “friends” make you feel ashamed of being yourself, they are not your friends. When you say you “try to be white”, what exactly does that mean? Have you ever thought that maybe if the topic of Asia came up, you could contribute something interesting instead of feeling ashamed?
You say you’re worried about being judged for being Asian, but you also say that you “feel sorry for white people because they won’t understand the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this joy” of something you used to do in Vietnam. Then, you generalize that their idea of fun is only related to drugs, alcohol, and explicit stuff. That sounds very hypocritical. Do you have any hobbies or interests apart from sneaking out of the house to hang out at a convenience store? Hobbies that other people may also find interesting? It sounds as if you created an idea of what “white people” are like, based on what you’ve seen on TV or based on the expats you’ve met in HCMC. I know Vietnamese people are all about the community and it’s easy to do that when you all have a shared history and background. As a stranger in a strange land, of course it’s more difficult. Maybe instead of “trying to stay with the crowd” for the sake of being part of a crowd and having a very superficial relationship with people, you should try to be yourself and meet people that you can have better relationships with. I dont know how to really explain that but I mean like to be the same as them? Like to not make myself so different. Yes I’ve tried explaining to them how different Asia/Vietnam is to what they’ve been educated about but most of the time they make a racist joke about it and because im so introverted I just don’t really try to speak up about it again.
I do understand that I sound really small minded but Im not generalizing everyone in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this U.S (which I guess I should’ve explain) I belive that what I really mean by that is to talk about the people im surrounded by here. Yes I have sports and instruments and “sneaking out of the house to hang out at a convenience store” isn’t my hobby but it was just something I miss. And my hobbies are also really common but through what I’ve tried to find out, where I am they don’t really do what I do ( Piano, golf…) You will be fine. Fuck them, not your crowd. Keep up with your study, get some scholarship and get out of that bumfuck. Atlanta is right there. I am considering a scholarship to go back somewhere in Asia,Idk if thats a bad choice given the fact that I’ve made it all the way to America just to go back.
I was born in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this US (1st gen) but my family still had to assimilate to Western culture. My dad worked as a dishwasher, janitor to an assembler and retired as an Aerospace technician. He has the opportunity to better himself. When you’re from the Midwest, basically, you are the only Asian kid in school. My parents wanted a better opportunity for myself and my sister so we grew up in the suburbs with lower Asian population versus the cities. My parents would take us to highly Asian populated cities for vacations along with seeing US attractions. My dad made sure my sister and I celebrated all major western holidays and packed us western lunchs. My friends love our culture and always stops by after school for dinner and celebrate lunar new yr with us.
I have been to Vietnam 3 times and traveled from the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this North all the way to the south. It’s a great country to visit but not to live. It’s not Senior friendly, there’s no insurance really you pay first before you get care. When my dad got injured on our trip, there’s no nurses takecare of bedside care. You have to go to the pharmacy to get preop supplies. They do not change the bed sheets after each patient, this was a government own hospital, but I also heard from locals that international hospitals don’t have nurses or pcas to help. There’s stairs everywhere no ramps for elderly or wheelchair bound. A lot of the elderly do not live past 60 because they cannot afford health care. Usally, they are homebound and stuck. My Dad and Uncle are 75 and still travels and enjoy life (but with help from their kids). They still have their teeth so they don’t have to eat congee all the time. We keep up with their health every few months. Another thing about health, if you are diabetic, you have to go to the hospital to get your insulin shots each time. You cannot do it your self or have a supply at home.
You have to pay “coffee money a lot” sewer/plumbing systems aren’t that great. It’s bad when you have to toss your toliet paper in a bin instead of flushing it. I’m lucky that in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this US if we need assistance from the government/organization, they can help us if need and there’s loans too. The loans in vietnam are crazy high and not protected. My family lives the American dream and I am thankful for being here. The American dream is working hard and having security. While you do have to hustle but you are rewarded in the end like vacations days, sick time and retirement. In Vietnam you just need to work as much as u need to make money for the day to feed yourself and family, there’s no rushing there and time management is lacking. Plus you really don’t have vacation days. My Cousins and Uncles only take a few days off during Lunar new year. Some cannot afford to take it off so they don’t see family members for 1 to 3 yrs.
Save your money and vacation time and go back to visit. I literally got paid for 5 weeks to go on vacation to Vietnam and Korea. I know you are really homesick but going back there for vacation is still good and once you retire you can go back for 3 to 6 months. Since you are in the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this rural South, you might wish to consider joining a church. You don’t need to believe in what they are offering. You can use it for social connections and activities which are usually pretty wholesome. Nobody will challenge your faith. I was going to suggest this too. I’m not religious at all, but most of my Asian Americans friends met other friends either at school or church – attending either by choice or forced by family. There will always be people OP’s age attending out of obligation. Oh yeah I do go to church (im not religious) but I don’t know how to tell them that I don’t know if I want to become a christian or not.Although people there are great imo
Check the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this sub, there were a few similar posts in the past month, you may find support from others experiencing the exact same thing as you. Best advice is to make the best of it in the US, there are literally thousands of Viets wanting the same opportunity as you but cannot have it. Yeah I just read some and it does feel kind of better knowing im not the only one, I am really greatful for the opportunity i’ve been given and I’m using it to get scholarships…etc. Mcheew you think you are the only one that feel that way? Even African immigrants feel exactly like that. Life is even becoming tough here too because of so many people coming in to the country. So feel free to go back , but I bet you won’t because life is way better than Vietnam. Aside for the loneliness. The problem is that you’re in a “small-medium town in Georgia.” You’d have a different experience if you lived in cities like NY, SF, LA, Seattle, Chicago . . . Georgia is a flyover state (Google that) for Americans.
The American dream has been dead since 1913. Everything about it is the Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers 55th Anniversary 1970 2025 signatures shirt also I will do this veneer of what used to be. As you now know, the streets of America are far more dangerous than any place in Vietnam. The only positive to American life is the purchasing power of the Dollar bill. That’s it. Everything else is a tragedy. But the regime in America wants a chaotic society, because its not easy for a multicultural society to unite against the government. And it doesn’t just want that for American and European society. It wants that for the world. Look at any country under NATO and Western control, including Asian countries, and you will see a population that is shrinking to extinction levels. This is done on purpose, to create room for multiculturalism. The different groups of people are then weaponized against each other to the benefit of the ruling government powers. Black against White. Christian against Muslim, Black against Asian, etc.
