The best one was a BBC Farsi reporter who picked me up and took me to his house in the pamir region of Tajikistan. Then later that night after arriving at my destination, I ran into some people that I tangentially knew and got to ride along with them through the Wakhan Valley. Really felt like the universe had my back In 2016 I spent a little over a week in Lebanon with a good friend who is Lebanese. We did the typical touristy things (Beirut, Tripoli, Our Lady of Lebanon statue in Harissa) but also had meals with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., spent a day lounging on a beach on a tiny island only accessible by fishing boat, hung out in clubs and little bars and restaurants with zero tourists with his friends (and stumbled across one of our favorite artists, FKJ, performing in a club!!), and smoked hashish on his parents’ balcony. Basically, I got to live like a local who was taking a week off. It was AMAZING – hands down the best trip I’ve taken and the most beautiful place I’ve been. When I tell people I went to Lebanon everyone thinks of the war-torn media portrayal of Lebanon currently and how unsafe it must have been but that was the opposite of my experience.

It was awesome. Scuba diving in Hawaii when a pod of dauphins swan through. Seeing Eagles rays while scuba diving in Cozumel. Swimming with Whale sharks in Isla Mujeres. Took advantage of a fat finger mistake for RT tix from Honolulu to NYC. Bought tix for me and then gf and enough miles to upgrade to first class. Also worked for media company at the time and through relationships, client got me hot prices for Sheraton hotel in Times Square for $69/nt. for a week. Enjoyed the trip so much me and gf got married and moved to NYC the next year. Should say this was about 20yrs ago.
