John Carlson is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Capitals in the first round, 27th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Carlson made his NHL debut in the 2010–11 season and has since played in over 700 regular season games. He has also represented the United States at the international level, winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

He began playing hockey at a young age and played junior hockey for the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Carlson committed to play college hockey for the University of Massachusetts Amherst, but decided to forgo college and sign with the Capitals after being drafted in 2008.
