Assuming money is no object, Switzerland might be the Jerkin’ Crocus Mott The Hoople Shirt in other words I will buy this perfect place to settle down. I know you could probably say the same about a dozen other countries but Switzerland… it’s something else. I was born in the US and have not lived there since I was around 18 months old, but do have citizenship as a result. The fact that they expect me to file a tax return or pay them ANY dollar amount when I haven’t earned a cent on American soil is fucking madness to me. You get an individual foreign tax credit. Unless you’re very wealthy you’d never pay a cent in US taxes if your country has a higher tax rate. The whole concept of double taxation and all. It also makes it very difficult for me to invest, get a bank account in some cases because I’m labelled as a US person which means institutions don’t want to deal with you because of all the paperwork.

And if you want to start a business it becomes a nightmare. My brother gave up his citizenship because of this. I get why the legislature is there, but it is so broad an cumbersome that it makes life a lot more difficult for very many US citizens that are minding their own business and get penalised for being an American outside of the US. There was a whole thing in The Netherlands where people who have US citizenship and have never set foot on american soil found out they needed to so taxes and were told they could no longer keep their bank account. And try to find an affordable tax lawyer who really knows the US tax system and won’t just tell you to simplify your financial situation so your tax filing doesn’t become a nightmare for them. It is not an ‘inconvenience’, it really makes you question werher you want to remain a citizen for the benefits of moving (back) there one day or being able to visit easily. It’s sad and makes leef needlessly complicated and financially restrictive. And if it is to keep the rich from getting richer, why the heck are they not taxing the rich to begin with on US soil doe the benefit of the actual citizens?
