I’m currently 38 and an introvert who lives alone and likes it that way because I value quiet a LOT. I stayed in a hostel for the I’d rather be a dog than be a scab shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this first time around 35 and don’t think anyone gave any thought to how old I was. Most people are in their 20s but there were definitely some much older than me people too. Some people will recommend a private room in a hostel to save money but still have some privacy, but I find I form the most friendly relationships with people in my bunk room although I do meet people in common areas too. People are often looking for someone to grab dinner with and it’s a nice option to spend some of your time however you want and some of it doing things with the people you meet. If you’re able to be fairly flexible, I think you’ll be totally fine. The reviews on Hostelworld and other sites will usually give you an idea of which hostels are big party spots and which are more calmly social.

I stayed in a hotel in Portugal in 2022 when I was 32 and I felt ooooooooooooold. The hostel had a lot of “community” experiences to partake in but they were definitely geared towards the I’d rather be a dog than be a scab shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this youths, like pub crawls. When I was in my 20s & carefree I LOVED pub crawls and meeting fellow travelers. At 32 I felt like the tag along older sister trying to be hip. I didn’t go to the pub crawl in Portugal, but did a “family style” dinner one night and the conversations made me feel like a grandmother. Everybody else has great advice here. I can only add: Pick a chill hostel and you can be as social as you want to be. While you can expect the occasional good-natured conversation starter, people will leave you alone if your body language tells them to. They’ll be busy enough with their own things. And if you stay more than a couple days, half the faces will probably be new by the time you leave.
