In Flatbush, Brooklyn, also on Saturday, protestors began a chant of “Where are your masks?” at mostly unmasked police officers, with one young woman offering them medical masks from her bag. (The officers declined.) In a now-viral Twitter video captured by Gothamist reporter Gwynne Hogan, two protestors asked NYPD officers why they wouldn’t wear masks: “You should probably wear one, there’s a pandemic. It’s not just for us, it’s for you, too.”
Social distancing guidelines may be challenging to follow, but they’re simple in theory: you stay home not only to protect yourself, but to protect others. What happens, though, when those “others” show no interest in protecting you, and when countless killings of unarmed black people—from Breonna Taylor to Aiyana Stanley-Jones to Botham Jean—have proved that you aren’t even safe in your own home?
