In the I Don’t Coparent With The Government Sunglasses American Flag T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this corner of my apartment sits a vase of green hypericum berries and sunflowers. It resembles less “Vincent van Gogh painting” and more “attempted recreation of a Vincent van Gogh painting by a middle schooler”—there are a few awkward gaps, with some stalks slightly shorter than others. One flower is inexplicably wilted. Yet despite its imperfections, it brings me so much joy. In part because bouquets are scientifically proven to do so, but also because I went to the bodega, picked out miscellaneous flora, and arranged them myself.Just like sourdough starting and tie-dying, flower-arranging has emerged as a quarantine hobby. Florists and delivery companies have enthusiastically responded in kind: Lewis Miller, for example, offers “Flower Flash” boxes that include a link to a series of instructional videos. “You will learn how to clean and hydrate your roses and create an arrangement for your home, a centerpiece for a backyard picnic or a bedside arrangement, even a bud vase for your neighbor,” he writes on his website. Meanwhile, throughout the pandemic, Farmgirl Flowers has been uploading styling tutorials on their Youtube channel for every type of flora imaginable: peonies, roses, Gerber daisies, poppies, callas, and more.View on InstagramBut flower arranging isn’t just an activity to idly pass the time. As large scale events like weddings, graduations, and proms have been replaced with intimate gatherings, more and more people are using their own two hands to beautify them. “I’ve helped a coworker (via Zoom) style her wedding flowers in preparation for her Zoom wedding,” Kaylyn Hewitt, Bouq’s lead floral designer, tells Vogue. Bouqs recently featured a “make your own boutonniere” class on their IGTV, in service of grooms and supposed-to-be prom dates alike, as well as a Mother’s Day bouquet arranging session. “COVID has reminded me that flowers can be there when you can’t,” Hewitt says.View on InstagramSo whether you’re looking to spruce up your home or adorn a special occasion, we asked Hewitt to share the best flower styling tips for the amateur arranger. Below, her suggestions. (And remember, says Hewitt: “flowers themselves do most of the work.”)For a decor accent or table centerpiece:Start with adding in your greenery first. Greenery adds amazing texture to arrangements, but it also serves as the foundation of your arrangement. Adding in greenery first makes adding in the other elements a bit easier later.Next, layer in your textural stems and accent blooms. A textural stem is something like wax flower or solidago and accent blooms are your smaller flowers—think spray roses or carnations (I love them). Your arrangement will definitely start to fill out at this stage and you’ll start to notice holes where your focal flowers can go.Lastly, dot in your focal flowers. Focal flowers are typically the biggest blooms in your arrangement–roses, peonies, sunflowers. Adding these in last helps to fill any holes that you have in your arrangement. For a bridal bouquet:You’re getting married! Flowers are such an important part of the wedding day, but they don’t have to be stressful. My advice would be to choose your favorite flower, and then choose two accent flowers (or greenery) to go with your favorite focal. Before you start making your bouquet, organize them all on a table according to type. Also, make sure you have removed any leaves towards the bottom of the stems—this will make the flowers easier to manage when arranging. After your stems are tidy and organized, start with one of your focals (your favorite bloom) and then rotate your bouquet as you start to add other stems around the focal. Continue doing this (add a stem, rotate your arrangement in your hand) until you’ve used all your blooms. After you’ve added in all of your flowers, make any adjustments as needed and then tie off with a ribbon!

Queen Elizabeth sat alone at Prince Philip’s funeral. It was a practical precaution: Due to COVID-19 restrictions in the I Don’t Coparent With The Government Sunglasses American Flag T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this United Kingdom, she wasn’t allowed to fraternize with people outside her household bubble, which for the past 13 months has consisted of just Philip and her attendants.Yet as cameras captured her with her black hat low and eyes downcast, it became a sad, symbolic visual. For the past 73 years, the duke had been a constant presence by her side. Now there was no one to sit, or stand, by her.On her husband’s coffin sat a handwritten note. “I love you,” it appeared to read. “Lilibet.” (The queen had signed the note using her childhood nickname, which Philip reportedly used as a term of endearment.)For a moment, it didn’t feel like she was Queen of England, or a head of state. It just seemed that she, like so many, was experiencing the heartbreaking and isolating loss of losing someone in the pandemic age.Through the end of this week, Queen Elizabeth will remain in a formal period of mourning. But soon enough, she will sit on the throne without the man she called her “strength and stay” for the first time in eight decades. It’s a seismic shift to say the least—both for her and a nation accustomed to the prince’s presence. So what will the monarchy look like for the queen now?Reports say that over the next few weeks, a rotating slew of family members will visit her as she works through lockdown at Windsor Castle. With restrictions in place, most of these visits will take place outside.A new crew of furry friends will also keep her company. In March, she adopted two corgi puppies thought to be named Fergus and Muick. After Prince Philip’s funeral, she was spotted with them on the grounds of Windsor Castle. And although this Wednesday is her 95th birthday, the queen will reportedly forgo sharing a traditional birthday portrait with the public and instead spend the occasion privately.Yet soon enough, it will be back to business as usual—or as usual as business can be in pandemic times. There’s appearances to be made, and with the vaccine rollout continuing apace, even events to be organized: According to the Times of London, the queen is “ramping up” her plans for her Platinum Jubilee to mark her 70th year on the throne.Usually, Prince Philip would serve as her trusted adviser for these sorts of things. Instead, her son, Prince Charles, and grandson, Prince William, will help in his place. “Her family will step up and be by her side, but she will carry on,” a former senior palace aide told People. “She understands that she has a job to do, and [Philip] would have wanted her to crack on.” It’s also thought other senior members of the royal family—like the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Edward, and the Countess of Wessex—will accompany the nonagenarian monarch more on her visits rather than her going solo. Then there’s the question of reassigning Prince Philip’s patronages and causes, many of which he remained involved in until his passing. The Telegraph reports that Prince Charles and Prince William will hold a “royal summit” to discuss who will take on the roles—as well as those of Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, who stepped back from royal life. It’s assumed that Edward and Sophie will take on a larger, more visible role.Even in a tragic moment, it seems the Windsors are doing what they always do: carrying on.
