Honestly, it feels like a hot knife if you are resting / alert, or a sharp rock if you’re hopped up on adrenaline. I knew an old WWII Master Sgt. paratrooper who said he’d been shot twice. He said it doesn’t hurt, but it surprises the shit out of you. It hurts later but it’s not that bad. He was a really great guy, tough as nails and the kindest man I knew. Really cold and then really hot. Its very painful although I would say being stabbed is a bit worse in general. I think a big part is that most of the times you get shot it comes through something like clothes or a coat, messed up its fragmentation a bit or maybe slows it down. Also guns tend to be ranged hole punches, knives are porn star six inches inside you all at once.

Initially though, nothing. Not a survivor, but my dad was a cop that was shot in the neck. My uncle decided he would kill himself and asked my dad where he should shoot himself to deal with the least amount of pain. My dad’s answer was “No idea. I only got shot once and it hurt like hell”. I was shot in the back and arm. It burned, it felt like someone held a torch to my skin in the area. I fell initially, got helped up by a friend and then I remember waking up in the hospital. I was hit with shrapnel from an exploded shell casing of a live round in the arm. Barely felt it, really no pain but i just felt blood gushing down the back of my arm.
