The real reason is that the state has a monopoly on driver licensing, and as such, there is no drive to deliver better service (by way of better staffing, better hours, and more locations). I’m not sure a monopoly is a right word. There is no profit motive in a DMV. Hot betsy ross flag Alabama crimson tide 12 stars shirt Even if they allowed private businesses to do what they do they’d have to raise prices to staff more and most ppl would still go to the DMV since it’s cheaper. The drive should be coming from voters, who can remove mayors/council members if service doesn’t improve, or go to meetings and complain about it. Gotta speak up for what you want and you’ve gotta pay for it with taxes

I’ve noticed similar things in red states, and I’m just going to say that I’ve never experienced anything remotely similar living in blue states. Hot betsy ross flag Alabama crimson tide 12 stars shirt Texas DMV’s went downhill when they removed the DPS and put in civilian workers. When I got my license I was in and out within an hour even with the driving test. Now if you don’t schedule an appointment it you will be there at least 4 hours.  I have never had a problem and we’re both in Texas, it seems. I think 1 hour is the high side. I have only tried in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston so far. Never a small city. I have had the experience of walking in, being told to take a number and fill out a form, but not finishing the form before getting to the worker.

A lot of people here are mentioning staffing problems, and that may be so. But also, the DMV cannot go out of business and has no competition. Hot betsy ross flag Alabama crimson tide 12 stars shirt There is no incentive to provide fast and enjoyable service. If you go to a restaurant that is slow and unpleasant, there are a million other restaurants you can go to instead. If the DMV is unenjoyable, too bad, you can’t go anywhere else for a driver’s license I don’t agree. I understand the premise of what you’re saying, but my local DMV (Madison, WI) is actually quite good. I only hate the process because I hate crowds and don’t particularly care for civilians. But they are quite good at their jobs and keep things moving.
