Like basic fractions, trying to cancel (x+2)/x = 2, seeing sin(2x) and trying to use the product rule with sin and 2x… some still can’t even add or subtract consistently, how the hell am I supposed to get through six unit of calculus for a dual enrollment course??? Are you being serious that high school kids don’t know this? But I also read to my girls every night and we did / do mad libs on road trips. Girl when I tell you this is NOT what a significant amount of my 14-15 year olds are able to say, I’m dead serious. Ofc it’s different everywhere and I don’t wanna make huge generalizations across the board, but my high school is a very “high expectations/rigorous” type environment, and it’s truly wild how many enormous gaps they expose when we start getting into more challenging stuff. Also sidebar, this year I have at least 3 9th graders that have never passed an English class. Like. It’s so sad. This is where we are unfortunately.

Tired of all of society’s problems being dumped on teachers. Paying teachers a living wage. Incentivize the best and brightest to go into teaching. Cut the administrative bloat for funding to go to students and teachers instead. Let students fail as well. Make them retake classes. Don’t allow them to move on until they have actually learned the materials. I so much agree with this mastery based approach. Why should students move on to new material before they’ve mastered the foundations for it. Because admins don’t want to deal with annoying parents. It’s easier for admins to order teachers to not fail kids than it is for them to tell parents that their little special golden child is not actually engaging with the materials in their class. I think having mixed aged classed would help, too. The class should be based on the level of the material, not the age of the child. Ofc, this would mean you might have a kid going to a “4th grade” class for reading and a “2nd grade” class for math. But plenty of kids have asynchronous development. Because if it’s not teachers driving this change we’re going to get short-sighted politicians or parents with an agenda shaping the discussion. It doesn’t have to be all of us, but it does have to be us. First of all end programs like no child left behind. Second end school funding being tied to the number of students in seats. Next phonix for reading in primary grades. Lastly the full ability of schools to be able to punish and remove problem students.
