The style of make up was heavily influenced by drag and RuPaul’s drag race was hitting major mainstream success with season 8 and UNHhhh started. It was also influenced by tumblr, which was also hitting its peak. I watched multiple great makeup YouTubers that year, not a single one of them are on YouTube anymore and the ones still there now are drenched in so much controversy their makeup lines aren’t worth my money. It’s so sad because the instant I find someone I like they become unwatchable It was a time where heavy, noticeable makeup was really on trend. The way we consumed makeup back then was insane. I had drawers full of makeup, like maybe over 20 lipstick colours. There was a heavy emphasis on makeup being a show of skill or creativity more so than complimenting one’s natural features. There was a learning curve to this makeup style, so lots of people got really into tutorials and I think because of that, we almost got hung up on it being the default. The trend has changed dramatically in favour of less is more and I notice myself automatically doing what is now considered dramatic eyeshadow which at the time was maybe a lighter lewk. It was a time where makeup was really front and center and it’s sort of hard to unlearn that.
Be glad that you missed it super matte and powdery everything, “baking” with powder, so much contour, like they were telling everybody to do full cake face makeup with contour that was made popular by drag queens on stage, like stage makeup, but suddenly we were expected to wear that kind of heavy makeup in our everyday lives. Not saying this is specifically real, but I have had a couple times in my IT employment where things shuffle or whatever and I was getting paid for nothing. My boss has 38 direct reports. 25 of them do little to nothing on a weekly basis. Guys pulling in 75-100k usd for maybe one or two tasks a week. Rest of the summer, I just kind of hung around, since the head of the area wanted to do the shelving themselves now that they didn’t have to do the boring bits. My bosses never got around to assigning me to someone else and I returned to school really well rested in the fall.
A buddy of mine in Sales (software) had a bunch of accounts that he just needed to maintain. He got bored and ended up finding another Sales job paying more (not in Tech). My very first job out of college was a very similar experience. I was to assist a manager with their financial administration duties. Three days in they got reassigned and I did not. Literally had nothing to do for six months and kept expecting to get fired. Finally found someone who could do something about it and got reassigned.
