That expression makes my teeth crack from cringe. It’s horrible, and disrespectful, especially to women who literally die or otherwise suffer lifelong complications and chronic pains after childbirth. It’s one of the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this worst manifestation of “woo” expressions. I think for someone to care that much about splitting hairs on the terminology (news: not all of our language is literally literal) is an indicator of unaddressed resentment of some sort. Talk to each other to figure out what that resentment is. “We’re pregnant” is a very cringe thing to say. Its also the same people who refer to their spouse/gf/bf as their “partner” One of us almost died in childbirth. And it wasn’t the father. Therefore, I was pregnant, we were expecting a baby. IMO men claiming a share of pregnancy degrades the experience for women.
Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt: A Provocative Statement in Modern Fashion
He can say he’s pregnant when he’s carrying the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this child in his uterus. Oh, he’s not? Then his partner is pregnant and he needs to recognise his good luck that he was born male and that his total contribution to the pregn was minutes (laughing at the 45 minutes btw!). But men now can be amazing and excellent dads. With the exception of breastfeeding you can do everything women can. Get in there and give your baby skin to skin time, change those nappies, sing those songs and soothe those angry little potatoes. I find it cringey, but not because of the actual effort or disparity in physical commitment from both parties. It’s just…cringey sounding. Like, saying your partner is pregnant is clear enough. Just say the normal thing. I think that the amount of support provided both for the mom and the child can (in many cases) justify the idea that both parties are equally responsible for the child.
Contributions of non pregnant partner = contributions of the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this pregnant partner + all the risks and hardships that come with being pregnant. But it slightly irks me when said by the partner of the pregnant person. Kind of like they are taking credit for carrying the baby when clearly they aren’t. Yes men should be actively involved, yes that involvement ought to be acknowledged more too. But what exactly is wrong with “we are expecting” or “we’re going to be parents”? I think you’re both right to some extent. Your wife might be right about only have 30 secs-45 mins to do with the matter… but only if the guy is a shitty person. Plenty of men pick up slack that their partner can’t handle and involve themselves in the pregnancy where they can (nowadays). Your wife is correct, though, in the sense that men’s involvement is basically optional and how involved the man will be is always going to vary.

I really don’t think you owe your wife an apology. As someone who has had multiple pregnancies with a supportive husband, I would never ignore the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this extra effort and consideration of me he’s dealt with in order to make life easier for me during my pregnancies. The only problem I have with people saying “We’re pregnant” is that it’s technically incorrect. I don’t think it’s (necessarily) philosophically incorrect. I think it’s a very silly thing to get upset about But there is no reason to make it a fight, don’t use it if it upsets her, it doesn’t matter who is right. I feel like men who say this are conscioudly or unconsciously claiming ownership over the wife and unborn baby. I thought the “we” was low key ridiculous cause I’ll never be pregnant. She thought of it as something we were in together, and sometimes said “we”. I’m not gonna tell her we’re not in it together, because I’m not stupid. It’s up to her, but “we” are clearly doing the light work here.
My spouse makes a good point: if said by two expectant females or NB/gay/trans/etc equivalents, this is totally accurate! Nope. I’m old school. I don’t get periods or cramps, or morning sickness, or sweats, or lugging a growing belly around, worrying about post natal weight loss, the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this pain of childbirth, etc etc. I’m childfree and a massive introvert, so I don’t really run into this kind of thing in my daily life. But to me it just sounds kinda weird, like are you carrying an embryo/fetus in your body? No? Then you’re not pregnant and I don’t know why you would say you are. Like sure, the father is well, the father, and the baby is his, and he deserves to take pride and responsibility for it, but to say “we’re pregnant,” implying that he’s also carrying a baby, when he isn’t? It just seems weird to me I don’t get it. I’ve done it three times. My husband was incredibly supportive, but he didn’t go through any of the actual pregnancy experiences.. he just supported me while I went through them.
You wouldn’t say “we have cancer” just because you support your spouse through their experiences and attend all doctors appointments. You’re experiencing something entirely different from your spouse. *I’m not comparing pregnancy to cancer. Obviously, they’re completely different. However, one person experiences the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this symptoms while the spouse can only provide support. The comparison in that context alone felt accurate. “We’re pregnant” is stupid. The woman is pregnant. I wouldn’t get mad at “We’re expecting” though, because they are both expecting a child Are “we on our period” once a month otherwise? How silly. Pregnancy is a biological process. As men, we help start the process but that’s it. We provide a catalyst and the reaction is 100% hosted by her. Unless you’re Schwarzenegger in the movie Junior.
I mean if my husband is involved with caring for me through my pregnancy and will be raising the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this kid (I mean, that’s the ideal scenario right?) then I have no objection to “we’re pregnant”. We are both having a child that is currently gestating. My username checks out, so my opinion might be meaningless, but for what it’s worth I always found this phrase cringe. I mean, before “cringe” was even slang the phrase “We’re pregnant!!” just made my skin crawl. It’s so… look. Take the one indisputably badass, totally unique, metal AF, irreplaceable thing that women lay claim to in this world of ours… our role as the generators of new life… and devalue it in the name of what? Including hubby? God bless his little jizz shootin’ contribution, not gonna deny that, but… no. Ladies, why? Say “I’m pregnant with [name’s] baby” if you must (another dumb usage, by the way— it’s at least as much the mothers baby). But he is NOT pregnant, and therefore “we” are not pregnant, and damnit if he wants so much to be involved then find some way for him to actually help once the baby is born.
to me being pregnant is a state of the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this body. being pregnant means carrying the child physically. not simply the state of expecting a child. this is why not both parents are pregnant, only the woman is. i always thought like this ever since i was a child, and i was perplexed when i found out there are people who dont think this way. it doesn’t make sense no matter how you turn it 107 more repliesSo HATE the “we” are pregnant saying. Ask again in 9 months to see how much the father does for the baby for the next 5 years. If there are complications are we both going to die? No. She’s pregnant, you’re both expecting. She’s doing the risky stuff, and if it’s a vaginal birth it’s going to feel for her like no pain you could ever feel, like shitting a cannonball. So painful that women often blank out the exact memory, like a PTSD thing. That’s an evolutionary thing so they don’t just stop after 1, according to my wife who risked eclampsia twice for our two. Us dudes, our job is to help her get ready, get the house ready, build that nest, and ensure that nothing stresses her. It’s a futile struggle but do your best. She’s going through way way more to bring your issue into the world. Pregnant means a foetus is developing inside the person. It doesn’t make sense for straight couples to say “we’re pregnant”.
It’s ridiculous. Good try at attempting equality in the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this one area that cannot be shared. But it’s actually misogynistic- a woman sharing credit for this act with a man. I wouldn’t over think it if someone said that about their situation or even if my partner said this otherwise I’d be obsessing over words that don’t matter in a very negative and unproductive way. If your wife’s leg is broken, you wouldn’t say “we have a broken leg”. You’d say her leg is broken. It doesn’t matter that her broken leg requires you to support her; she is still the one with the broken leg. You are not pregnant; she is. She is the one that has to go through the pregnancy. You are just supporting her through the process.
It’s not that deep. Who cares? You should check with your partner bc I’m sure while some women may feel irritated by we’re pregnant others could feel cast aside by Shes pregnant. Again, it’s just not that deep. Meh, we’re expecting is better, but given the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this expectations laid on the male partner through the process, it’s typically a team effort. Only insecure women get bent out of shape over this. In my mind, it’s my husband’s baby too. He supports me, gives me grace when I’m deep in my hormones, and accepts me as I change and grow as a mother. He’s not a sperm donor, he’s a father. He may not physically grow this baby or be the primary caregiver but as an active, participating member of this parent team, this baby is as much his legacy as it is mine.
Until he fights not to scream in pain rolling over in bed at night (SPD) or gets bruises on the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this outside from the force of baby’s kicks (my son) then we are not pregnant. I am pregnant. My brother’s wife just announced them being pregnant, and she was so happy about it. Everyone knows what this means, no one thinks bro’s going through the same thing as the his wife. But they appreciate one another, and will be going through this together. I personally think that they can call it whatever as long as they’re both happy with it. But if it were me, I’d honestly just say my wife is pregnant and would want her to say that too. If my husband wants to take on “his share” of the postpartum lifetime medical complications I now have in my life due to giving birth, I don’t mind revisiting this debate.
I think if I push a lot of factors aside and think about only the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this intention behind it, “we’re pregnant” COULD be more of a support thing, rather than, “I’m the man, and, am doing just as much work as my pregnant wife/partner.” If it’s not about comparing, and someone’s saying, “we’re 100% in this together!” by saying “we’re pregnant” could be phrased better, it’s cute. I don’t think everyone’s intentions are the same when they say this, and, not everyone will interpret your intention, it if it’s said in the context I’m describing. So, as a mom myself, I don’t mind when people say this (we didn’t) – I try to give people the benefit of doubt that they’re just excited and trying to be supportive. But, I also agree that “we’re expecting” is more accurate and leaves less room for drama than “we’re pregnant.”
As a woman, I don’t mind my husband (or men) saying “we are having a baby”, but I definitely am not ok with “we are pregnant”. Nope, I am pregnant. You male are not. I think pregnancy and having a child are two different things. Just like the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this wedding is not the same thing as the marriage. The wedding is a day of party time, but not part of your marriage. That’s just me, but I tend to be a grumpy person. The baby lived and grew in my uterus. We weren’t pregnant, I was. We didn’t give birth, I did. We didn’t breastfeed …I could go on. I think people sound ridiculous when they say that, especially the male in the equation. Of course you’re having a baby as a couple and of course the dad will have more of an active role once the baby arrives, but you aren’t pregnant too.
I hate the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this term. I don’t have a problem with the term ‘we’re expecting a baby’. This term doesn’t ignore the massive disparity in contribution to the pregnancy, whilst still allowing both parties a share in the excitement of the impending arrival. The only real reason to say it is because it’s a person talking about the family as a whole expecting a new baby. It feels awkward to say “my wife is pregnant “ it sounds distant, disinterested, or even possibly implying the baby isn’t your own. There’s no easy way to say “my wife is pregnant, but I’m equally excited and supportive and 100% the other parent”. So you just say “we’re pregnant”, which is a more direct way to say “we’re expecting”, which seems to be the best phrasing. You should ask your wife, when you go to a bakery and get a great cake. Do you thank the chef that put all the ingredients together, or do you thank the oven that just cooked it?
Nah. I hate “we”. My wife would be the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this one who’d have to deal with the sickness and bloating and weight gain and everything else. Never mind the delivery. Nope, “we” is bullhockey. “We” would be having a baby, yes. But I am a man, and I cannot be pregnant. Therefore “we” cannot be pregnant. It’s just a phrase. Use it if it you like it, don’t if you don’t, but everyone knows what it means. No one thinks the dad is carrying or birthing the baby. Yeah the dad can help a lot but no amount of help will ever make the baby without her doing everything but the conception biologically alone. Yes, it can be a big deal and yes, some people probably know someone who couldn’t have done it without some help or intervention, but it’s still possible to do alone no matter how much it sucks. The dad can’t do any of that. He can help with conception and then support the mom who’s making the baby. It’s not a men vs women issue and shouldn’t be made into a challenge or perceived as an insult, but let’s not forget only one of us can carry that thing to term and it sure as heck isn’t me
Both parties may be responsible for the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this child, but let’s take a look at how it comes into this world. The guy has sex and presumably nuts in his wife. The woman gets potentially morning sickness, maybe a risk of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and a myriad of other possible complications that I can’t even begin to list all of them right now. Many women still have to go to work during all of this. Then after you give birth, you can be left with permanent damage to your body, on top of the possible mental health side effects such as PPD. So the term “we’re pregnant” always seemed so silly to me for those reasons. Interesting because I always thought it was women who came up with the phrase… passively affirming who’s the committed baby daddy.
I don’t think I’d mind if my husband said it as long as it wasn’t something he felt was really happening and there is a difference. ‘ Announcing one time “we’re pregnant” and then not saying it anymore is how I have heard this done in my experience. That was cute, and then from there out the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this mom said my pregnancy, I’m pregnant etc. The woman does most of the work in the pregnancy, developing and carrying the child to term, and experiences all the side-effects. But just remember, it takes 2 to tango. If the man didn’t put his “two cents in,”: the pregnancy would never occur. And, hopefully during the pregnancy, the man is there to support the woman in all ways, physical, emotional, etc… WE didn’t have nausea, hemorrhoids, heart burn that could melt stone, back and hip pain to the point of needing a cane and PT, kicks to every part of the body, lightening crotch, headaches, hormonal swings! WE didn’t get poked and prodded until we lost all sense of modesty because everyone has seen every part of your body and knows everything about you! WE didn’t have leaky, painful breasts. I agree. I cannot stand it. Men need to accept that when it comes to making babies, they are a small part of the equation. I’m a woman who has never been pregnant, but unless a man walks around for months with an extra 50 lbs strapped to his belly and weights on his feet for the swelling 24/7 he isn’t pregnant. And I’m sure women who have been pregnant can add to the list…. In other words, it’s ridiculous. I think it’s insensitive and I don’t like it. Using more neutral language like, “we’re going to be parents,” conveys the same message without claiming the credit. Think the 1950s father who puffs up in pride when his wife delivers a “perfect” baby boy for the football team but regularly beats her because he had a bad day at work. It feels like a gross holdover of the patriarchy.
As much as the Gorilla some people aren’t just missing a screw the whole toolbox is gone shirt but in fact I love this modern father may support the one carrying the fetus, they still cannot physically carry the fetus and all the good or bad moments. They do not experience the shifting of organs, permanent changes to the body, skin stretching, sleepless nights, skipping out on unsafe-for-pregnancy medications and then suffering ALL the symptoms of cold/flu/misc illness. Bloating, gas, round ligament pain, mood swings, and the responsibility of growing a healthy fetus which also entails unreasonable-but-very-real-guilt if something goes wrong. Both people are (hopefully) invested, but one person carries the emotional burden. I hate it. There are so many other phrases that can be used to acknowledge the father’s involvement. “We’re expecting.” “We’re starting a family.” “We’re having a baby.” The fact is that women are the pregnant ones and men should not be laying claim to being in that position. They’re not, unless they’re trans men. It’s an experience that men do not have and do not understand. It’s incredibly insulting and devaluing of what we’re going through.
