I wouldn’t suggest giving a range because then they’ll just offer $100k. I wanted to share my experience with anchoring on the hiring side. The role I was hiring for was entry level and I was interviewing graduates. Narrowed to four candidates and the top one absolutely refused to name his price. When that happens you will be offered the low range of the position. He came back asking for more and again refused to give a number. I passed on him and hired second candidate who asked for a number in range and I gave him the job for what he asked for. This 100%. You have to anchor. The whole make them guess doesn’t work. The other side is trying to play off offers can backfire too. Had candidates try that and the hiring dragged on so long it pissed off the hiring manager who pulled the offer. Working in higher Ed, it may not be a negotiating tactic. Regardless, your suggestion makes sense. I agree with others that staying the top number, not a range, is the best option tho.
