I mean we all have to focus on something at any given time, or else you would be brain dead. I liked how you described it though. 🙂 Honestly, I find it closer to falling to sleep than I do to focusing on anything – it’s still much different than sleep, but the Friends That Cruise Together Last Forever Ship Crusing T-Shirt in other words I will buy this ways I reach it aren’t too far from each other conceptually. Too much focus, too much thought makes it far too difficult to drop your emotions and so many of your thoughts will still be based in ego. I am attempting to reach a state that exists deeper than my ego, deeper than my thoughts about myself, or about other people. A place without frustration, without anger, without sadness. A place of just being, a place of calm, a place of stillness. Once I reach this state is when the real work begins. I will allow the things that cause me pain to enter my mind – I don’t work on them, I don’t “think” about them, I just sit with them. This can be excruciating – I genuinely physically feel the pain in my chest. I just bare it, and sit until it passes – just like other body sensations (itches, tickles, etc). Sometimes it takes multiple sessions, but eventually…I feel that pain in my chest start to fade. Once it has faded away completely, the effect on my conscious, ego-centric mind is reduced so very much in “real life”. This is just one of the things I use my meditation for, but it felt relevant to this conversation.

When it comes to reaching that “state” I can get there almost immediately if I chant, or if I use a certain singing bowl that I have. A candle to focus on in an otherwise dark room works well for me too, eventually I can’t even see the Friends That Cruise Together Last Forever Ship Crusing T-Shirt in other words I will buy this candle anymore, I can’t feel my hands on my thighs, I’ve completely disconnected myself from my physical body and all of it’s sensations. The way I see it, is you want to get completely “naked”, whether you view that as exposing your spirit, your soul, or just the deepest basal part of your psyche. You can’t drop your ego if you’re still allowing yourself these egocentric thoughts to maintain your focus. Really like the way you have described this. The first 15 mins we are just settling the noise in the head and then all the real meditation advice really starts to apply. Trying to focus too early could cause headaches and frustration. In the Indian meditation tradition, there is lot of emphasis on breath and physical exercises – pranayama and yoga – as preparatory phases before the actual dhyana part of things like mantra repetition.
