I can’t even think of a way you could use it offensively as it’s a descriptor, not a profanity. Any sane person would it’s not racist. If it’s easier to identify who you’re talking about by using the word “black” then by all means do it! You used two adjectives to describe him. Alone, neither seems particularly problematic. If you had described him as a “big guy” or a “black guy”, I don’t think the other people would have reacted the way they did. The reason it was interpreted as offensive might come from the fact that you used them together, implying that he is big because he’s black. That is racist. I’m white so I have no dog in this fight but, I highly doubt a black man would take issue with being described as black? That would be like me being mad someone called me white. Lol it’s not a bad word or even an insult. It’s just what I am, and I’m not ashamed of it at all, nor should any black person ever be. We are what we are and that’s part of what makes the melting pot beautiful and authentically American… (Assuming this is America ofc).
