The one one capitol officer took the shot as Babbitt was hoisted up to go through broken door window. The fact that only officer shot showed the restraint of the officers, restraint we don’t usually see from street police who tend to all start shooting once one shoots. Babbitt was hit once (I believe) and fell backwards; the capitol officers waited to see if that was enough to keep the mob at bay. While any death is regrettable even if provoked, the cap police did what had to be done without panic even though they could see the mob had clubs and other weapons and knew there was rioting all over the Capitol. Given the circumstances, all 4 or 5 could have opened fire as soon as the window was broken as they own lives were then in danger as well as the Congressmembers still fleeing behind them, but they showed restraint in the face of chaos.
