So just in my personal experience, I have a relative who came out as FTM trans at age 13. His parents got him on hormone blockers right away. He started testosterone a few month later and now his voice has dropped and he’s got some decent facial hair. He hasn’t had any surgeries. I assume he will eventually have top surgery, probably before he’s 18. That being said, he seems young, you know? Currently his gender expression seems more non-binary than male. His mom gets pretty upset with him when he wants to wear jewelry or makeup. This really bothers me because I feel like he should be able to express his gender identity however he wants. I do also worry sometimes about whether this is still what he wants.

I know a lot of people who oppose gender affirming treatments for trans kids are worried they will regret it later. Personally, I feel like the kid should have stayed on hormone blockers for another couple of years before starting T, but again it’s not my business. Other people shouldn’t be able to have an opinion on trans people’s medical treatments. No, children are not getting gender affirming surgeries. When we talk about trans kids transitioning, we’re talking in a broad, social sense. “Cross dressing” is a crude way to put it, but it’s not exactly that far off. A 13 year old trans girl is not going to go out and get breast implants and a vaginoplasty. She’s going to change her name, use different pronouns, wear different clothes or style her hair a different way. Nothing permanent or earth shattering. From a medical standpoint, at most, her doctor may prescribe her hormone blockers to prevent her from going through a male puberty. This will hold her off until she’s old enough to begin hormone replacement, at which point she will begin taking estrogen and essentially skip her male puberty in exchange for a more female one. If she stops taking the hormone blockers, her male puberty will resume. All of this assuming that she continues to identify as a girl this whole time. It’s possible things will change. If she gets a little older and feels she’s a boy after all, then that’s okay too. None of this is about forcing children to be trans, it’s about allowing children the freedom and safety to be trans, if they just so happen to be.
