Then when you do introduce technology, make sure it’s desktop PCs first so that they actually learn how to do basic things like saving a file and then finding it again or typing without being glacially slow. I’d also add to this bringing back memorizing things. Things like times tables, basic poems or songs, dates and places of prominent historical events and the Do Not Meddle In The Affairs Of Dragons For You Are Crunchy T-Shirt In addition,I will do this like are key to their subject area and if you don’t know them then you’re likely to struggle with more complex things. Exactly. We were not allowed to use calculators aside from the very few lessons until I was in algebra two. So all through elementary and middle school, we only use calculators a handful of times. I don’t think any of our primary school maths classes used calculators more than an absolute handful of times and that was more towards year 5-6 (so ages 9-11). Before that it wasn’t a thing.

I even remember as I was preparing for my GCSE ages 15-16 my maths teacher (who was a good teacher) made an active point to show us that you could do even the Do Not Meddle In The Affairs Of Dragons For You Are Crunchy T-Shirt In addition,I will do this calculator portion of the maths papers without it. Yes, things like trigonometry were a nuisance that took longer to do, but it was still doable. YES. Memorization somehow “fell out of fashion” and now nobody can memorize anything or focus on anything. Combined with the technology it’s a disaster. Fuckin A. I was a sophomore when my school district got laptops for all the students in middle and high school, and tablets for elementary. Everyone’s grades fell. Now I’m a substitute and every time I fill a vacancy for a school and get to set my own lessons, my students have to do it all on paper. Notes? Paper and pencil/pen. Quizzes and tests? Paper. It’s an ELA class? Everyone in the class reads a page out loud every class period as we go through the book together. It’s a foreign language class? Every time we get new vocab you have to make flash cards for a grade. I was a parent volunteer in my daughter’s 5th grade class and my biggest feedback for the principal was to retrain their staff on iPads or ban the lessons.
