Agree that my students completely forget all the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this information during summer break, but to not be able to do basic skills….idk that’s a stretch. I can understand forgetting the Napoleonic code and the invasion of Russia, but to forget how many months in a year? The brain isn’t simply forgetting things, it simply isn’t functioning. I’m convinced teacher prep programs and higher ups in pd or admin essentially want Montessori levels of engagement and “fun”, “exciting” “student directed” learning on about an 8th of the budget- and they somehow think it work. Basically it’s the science of the spiral method. They had a 2-3 year gap where they just…stopped learning. That still fucks with a kid’s brain No no. You have to blame the parents! And Covid! Why would we expect teachers to be responsible for how well kids learn?
Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt: A Provocative Statement in Modern Fashion
Seriously though- having this sub pop up is so discouraging. My oldest is only in kindergarten but hearing some of these comments make me anxious that his teachers hate their job, think he’s dumb, or that I’m a bad parent. Getting through Covid was hard enough- but knowing that teachers are already counting these kids out before they even begin? It’s so sad. In my job, if a client doesn’t understand what we sell, that’s on me. It’s my job to explain. I don’t get to blame anyone else when the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this outcomes are bad. If high schoolers don’t know shapes… how is that not the fault of their previous teachers? I think the issue is too great to put blame on one group of people. There are so many factors contributing to this insanity. On one part, I think educators have lost the plot of teaching, and that is education and not entertainment like another teacher on this sub said. I also think the administration’s passing students who fail is a huge factor, too. The goal of school shouldn’t be that everyone is able to move up grades but that they actually learn.
Also, a big part of the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this issue is technology that prohibits students’ ability to actually do anything and cultivate skills. Having experimented with Chatgpt to see what it’s all about, I can tell you myself that the more I used it to generate information, the less I used my actual brain and as an adult and teacher, I could literally feel my skills becoming rusty. Having tech that feeds you information will cause students’ brains to literally stop working. Why should students think when a computer can do it for them. Also, parents or the overall parenting techniques that are popular today also play a role in perpetuating this issue. Lack of proper parenting is creating out of control children. There are children who simply don’t know how to respect an adult. Some children are so used to getting their way at home and simply can not cope in a classroom.

Buy this Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt
The element of respecting elders is gone. Teachers are expected to get the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this students to like them instead of expecting students to respect the teacher. Students feel they can say what they want, do what they want, without concenquences. Obviously, your child is much younger, so this may not apply to him…….but again……what will his high school classroom look like if this continues? The attention spans are at an all-time low thanks to the endless short-form content they scroll through every waking second they aren’t at school. Yes. But I find that sometimes videos are more distracting and even boring. For example, last week I had shown my students a video comparing Hamilton and Jefferson, and a minute in, some were complaining that the voice, visuals, etc. were either boring or distracting. They had a much harder time finding the main idea and points. When I lecture, I can clearly illustrate the main points without adding in detail that will distract them…..yes they have shirt attention spans but maybe giving them a break from the colorful images and sounds they see and hear a whole day helps them focus…..idk….
I posted this up the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this thread, too. As for the illiteracy, it’s because schools literally stopped teaching kids how to read. They taught them to memorize words, and look at pictures to figure out what a word is. No phonics, no sounding out. And this went on for decades! Sight words…it’s just what it sounds like, knowing a word on sight and that is NOT reading. Sold a Story is an excellent podcast that discusses how we got to a place where we don’t teach kids to read and what should be done now that they’re illiterate. Also, activist and maker of the documentary “right to read” Kareem Weaver has robust information on his website. M I listened to a podcast about how in the Bush era, students in the US were being taught to “read” through context clues as opposed to sounding out words—is this still the method of reading instruction happening in schools, or was that more of a early 2000s thing? This is so interesting. I’m not a teacher but i live in AZ (worst state for education) Anyway is the current teaching method to make class more engaging? When did that happen?
There has to be a middle ground. Just because something isn’t fun to learn, or the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this method is boring, doesn’t mean you don’t need to learn it, or that the method isn’t the most effective way to make you learn it. Honestly I’m glad I had to study a bunch of boring stuff in boring ways. Reading a mind-numbing, inches-thick textbook on calculus, pretty dry, but I learned it, and pretty quickly too. Lectures at university, definitely had some heavy-eyelid moments, but generally that mechanism works, in combination with your own reading and tutorial sessions. I’m going to get lambasted for saying this but I think rote memorization has it place to learn basic rules and facts and to train your brain to retain information – especially in the age of endless attention getting screens. Even I find my attention and memory getting worse. But the fundamentals like spelling, multiplication. Parts of speech. Even memorizing short poems, and then move on to higher level stuff
I teach at the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this “highly selective” university level, and I’ve noticed students have less stamina. They’ve gotten incredibly used to some expert writing super high quality explanations of everything. When they suddenly aren’t spoon fed to that degree, they’re a bit lost. The worst students have no ideas of their own whatsoever, and I frankly don’t think they belong in my classroom. There’s always been bad students, and I don’t think it’s an insane decline in quality, but it seems noticeable to me. I teach high school and can’t believe how ahead my 2nd grader son is. I’m so lucky he’s at an amazing school. Some of my students are 14 and are at 1st or kindergarten reading levels. Ya it’s tough. I have one freshman that literally can’t read. Like at all. It’s so sad. They put her at kindergarten level but I think it’s worse.I’m curious. Is this affecting only title 1 schools, or is this a widespread problem for everyone?
I’ve only ever taught in title 1 schools. I have a hard time imagining that the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this average isn’t significantly better elsewhere. I lead clubs that have elementary students in them (chess and HOPE squad.) Some of the same issues discussed in this forum are commonplace in my clubs, and this is in a very high-income area. I went to a Title 1 elementary school myself, and these same issues still existed. It’s everywhere now. I can vouch for this. I am a part-time reading tutor. The curriculum I teach is for skills up to the end of third grade. In some districts I teach at, there are 6th through 8th graders (middle school) that cannot read at that level. They have difficulty blending. Their vocabularies are also quite limited. We sometimes come across words that most would consider common, yet the kids have no idea what they mean. To be fair, words like tune, mule, and dash may not be in her family’s everyday vocabulary, but dime and weigh, IMO, are words a 9 year old should know.
My son is in 3rd grade, he is in the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this 90th percentile in math and reading. I have visited his class sure kids talk etc but I don’t see major issues I read about here. I also taught pre kindergarten and most of my students were ahead of what was expected. I believe everyone’s stories in this thread but I also think if everything is working out you usually don’t go to the internet to talk about it. If students falling behind is an actual wide spread phenomenon-we need some data. What do they all have in common? I’m sure we have our guesses and first hand accounts. Yup, my sister’s kid is 6, and he is already reading actual books (not novels, but like, actual books without pictures in it). I think he’d be at the same level as some of the high schoolers around here.
And I love my nephew, but it’s not like he’s some naturally brilliant savant. He just has parents who give a shit and support his learning and reading. That’s just not happening for most kids these days. I don’t understand how this happens. Don’t students have to do book reports anymore? How do they keep passing the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this grade if they can hardly read? I’m only 22 but this just seems crazy to me. This is abominable. I’m coming up on 29, graduated HS in 2013. I was reading at a college level by the time I was in middle school and doing literary analysis, book reports, presentations. I was above the average but I also was aware that there were a lot of other kids that were smarter than me in some of my classes. Even an average or below average intelligent student in those days was well beyond functionally literate and able to handle algebra and even geometry, trig, and pre calc. Same with my 2nd grader. We’re actually contemplating taking her bookcase out of her room because she stays up way past her bedtime reading every night. I mean, we’re happy as hell that she’s such a voracious reader, but she’s absolutely not a morning person.
Then there’s our 5 year old. He’s big into Minecraft and always wants me to play with him. The other night, he said “We need to build a house. It will be 10 by 10, so we’ll need 100 blocks for the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this floor.” I looked at him in disbelief and asked how he knew that. “Well, there’s 10 rows of 10. 10 10’s makes 100.” So then I started asking different dimensions, 6×6, 12×12, 5×20, 4×16, etc. While it took him a bit, he figured it all out in his head. He’s got a summer birthday, and is the smallest physically in his class. We plan on having him do kindergarten again (the school is fine with it) though I hope he doesn’t get too bored. He kinda has that issue already I am in agreement with you. My students can’t pronounce words and don’t understand words even in context. They can’t organize their google drive or submit into a submission box. They are not digital natives just app using hominids. They are technological zombies. The thing is I have been telling them even the supposed tech skills you think you have will not be sufficient to compete against AI. The only thing that will save them is being more human than they have been raised to be. We are in a very challenging situation and unless we fix this problem we face a whole generation of non human humans.
This was my most shocking realization a few years ago. Teenagers sitting in front of a laptop, telling me they didn’t have Google. Insistently. Complete cognitive dissonance on my part until I realized – they have no idea what a search engine actually is. What a web-based anything is. They use apps, and the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this icon wasn’t on the screen, and therefore? No Google. Right? It’s weird, but I feel really lucky to be part of the generation born in the late 80’s/early 90’s who had relatively easy access to technology but still needed to learn to be able to use it – Windows 95/XP didn’t hold your hand. You didn’t have an app that did all the work for you. If I wanted music, I had to pirate it, and find out the hard way what happens if you download LinkinPark.exe from limewire. I had to figure out how to use a proxy to bypass my middle school’s firewall in order to show Salad Fingers and Homestar Runner to my idiot friends.
It really feels like my students have no technological curiosity. If there’s a roadblock in between them and what they want to do, they just sit there. There’s no initiative to figure things out for themselves or search for things. And it drives me fucking nuts that they can’t be assed to read the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this very simple instructions I write for how to do simple things on chromebooks. Instead, they beg for me to do it for them. I spend a ton of time in the Minecraft subreddit (too much time) and the amount of kids asking how X works/why Y doesn’t work when the details are on a Wiki or a devs website (the place they got the software from in the first place) is surprising. The idea of people turning to social media to answer all questions is frightening. We did LOTS of typing in “computer class” in elementary school- Mavis Beacon teaches typing. Why did they stop teaching typing? How are these kids gonna work an office job ffs? Man I have a lot of complaints about my school system as a kid but they fuckin crushed it when teaching my class about computers and how to navigate the internet.
I know that we’re all discussing our country’s future implosion but the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this words “Salad Fingers” and “Homestar Runner* just smacked me with the wet fish of nostalgia. Same generation here, and I’m constantly frustrated by how inflexible my smartphone is when I want to manipulate a feature, it works one way and if I don’t like that way, too bad. It’s nothing like the PCs I grew up with that let me dig into the software and hardware and change whatever I wanted to, breaking things and learning how to fix it as well and gaining understanding of how my computer worked (today I build them recreationally). But many kids don’t even have PCs anymore and never did, just being raised on these smart devices that actively discourage and prevent explorative curiosity in the effort to keep them from breaking anything important; they either “just work” or they don’t, the owner gets no input. Hell, you can’t even pop out the battery anymore, which was bottom-level troubleshooting back in the day. I guess today’s solution is to throw it out. We must be about the same age. I’m not a “techie” but necessity (if pirated music counts as necessity) led me to become fairly adept.
To be fair, the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this generation older than us seem to have not technological curiosity either. They were younger than I am now when all this was happening. I don’t hesitate to learn a new tech. I’m having a blast with AI. But lots of older generation still can’t text their grandkids. Early 2000’s kid here. I installed Ubuntu on mine and a couple of my friends’ school-issued chromebooks to play Terraria during math class, and keylogged my parent’s computer to get the password to the router so I could use the internet after bedtime. I doubt those who are truly curious about what can be done won’t continue to exist, but it certainly seems to be much more rare now that things are so easy. My bonus daughter was gifted a tv from her great grandmother and she asked if she could hook the old PS3 up to it and she had absolutely no idea what to do or how to even proceed and just kind of waited around for a week hoping someone would just do it for her until she realized if she wanted Netflix she’d have to do it herself. They seek nothing. It is all in their hands and at their fingertips and they need to have information fed to them. If it doesn’t come via a feed, or if they don’t comprehend what is fed to them, then oh well. They don’t seek alternative points of view or question things or go down rabbit holes even.
They don’t ask questions or seek answers with the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this tools provided. They don’t. ‘Google it’ or understand how to navigate a website or click links. They can’t type, format or use programs. Swipe, click, watch. All passive. Not a teacher, hell barely out of highschool myself, and reading this I am astounded. I was born in 2002, maybe it’s specific for the early gen z born in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, but my whole life has been around computers. There were smartphones as a kid of course, and I had one, but 90% of my online activity in like 2012 would’ve been on the computer. It does shock me, but I shouldn’t be surprised given all the reasons why, that kids today are as technologically illiterate as my grandmother was when I was 12. Let alone the actual material, I don’t see how you could survive school without knowing how to ctrl-f a file, or browse file explorer. Jesus. And teachers are saying that we cannot fucking fix this. We can’t go back in time and force parents to interact with their children, teach empathy, model critical thinking, read together. But most humans don’t like to hear that they’ve failed; and honestly, the unchecked capitalism we’re steeped in does not promote good parenting. Each generation slips a little, and now we’ve outpaced our primate brains so far…
Try to get an under-parented teenager to put down a phone. Try. You’ll see every marker of addiction across enough attempts. This is such a minor thing but I feel it is telling. I’ve had tons of interactions with kids (late teen to pre teen) that don’t understand the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this difference between download and install. They’ll say they downloaded something but it isn’t there or isn’t working. I ask if they’ve taken the second step of installing…some respond “I thought it would do that automatically” and some respond with “wdym?”. It’s as if some don’t comprehend the basics when it comes to software yet they’ve got this high tech tool in constant use. I get that could be a lack of curiosity regarding how that tech works and/or assuming that auto-installation is the standard and/or just being a kid…still it surprises me how prevalent it is, especially into mid-to-late teens.
That and not hitting a primary source for assistance…instead hitting up social media…and not grasping that social media has zero obligation/responsibility for providing factual information. Wow- I mean, I’m no tech person. I actually consider my understanding of computers pretty rudimentary compared to those I know- my eyes glaze over when it comes to coding or manually inputting commands, but maybe it’s due to the Devonte’ graham American professional basketball player South Bay Lakers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this fact I game on PC that I would know to open up a .rar file with winzip and then install the files manually into the correct place. This thread has given me a great amount of comfort as a young software engineer that I won’t be crowded out of the industry. If kids coming up now can’t use a computer, they certainly won’t be learning to code. As an aside if you do want to learn to code, the Odin project is a great place to learn. Do the JavaScript path.
