almost everything i have seen about a career in biology is people saying how much they regret it or how they have no jobs and no money. this makes me quite nervous as I’m going to start uni this year for biomedical sciences in the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this uk (i plan on going somewhere else for masters/PhD). i do have a great passion for it, its pretty much the only thing i actually enjoy studying in school and i often explore it on my own as well and i have a great aptitude for it. but i honestly dont know if im passionate enough for it to compensate for having shitty pay all my life. im happy to do a PhD as of now, my biggest interest rn is genetics but that can change ofc. but im kind of just freaking out that ive made the wrong choice lol.I love biology. I love everything about enviormental hazards for human health. I made my masters thesis in a cancer research lab so that I can connect the two. Never have I been able to find a job in those fields. Studied, went to take certificates, certificade my self to work with lab animals… nothing.
Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt: Unleash Your Inner Fighter
This I am literally working at Walmart and you know what it iss paying enough to barely cover my bills where the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this bio degrees never did. I loved the work especially labs I STILL read random research papers but I can’t afford to work in that field where locally even with a masters your getting like 12 an hour… I know kids in high-school getting 18 amd hour!! Yet we have all these certs to work with whatever samples and everything all for pennies cause and no one want to hire anyone no they want students and grant workers not actual employees I know PhDs who are having a hard time finding a job who have lab experience outside of their doctorate work. STEM jobs still have good prospects even where other job markets are struggling, but I would suggest NOT doing a PhD unless you want to go into academia (which has a terrible job market in a lot of places currently). A PhD is not needed to go into industry, and undertaking a PhD will significantly delay your entry into the standard job market. A masters degree however can still be good value for money, particularly if you do taught masters (1-2 yrs). This will also allow you to enter the job market with more specialised knowledge and skills than an undergraduate, so gives you a bit of an edge.
Yes i deeply regret it and so do all my friends from the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this career. All of us worked really hard, studied really hard, did masters, unpaid internships and tried everything we could. There are simply not jobs enough in the field and most are either unpaid or they underpay you and treat you horribly. I have six friends from the career and none of them work in biology. We all needed to switch careers because there aren’t jobs. We live in Spain, France, Germany (and before in the Netherlands and belgium). Its a problem all over the EU and for what i hear its the same in other areas. Honestly? Study at home what interests you but in the university go for a field that can give you a job. If not you risk wasting your best years trying to study and work to end up in your 30s needing to start all over again because of unemployment. ps: I guess the best way is to milk the rich STEM jobs and retire early to do what’s worth your brain, soul and time

This a good example of the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this ‘love a field’ and ‘love a field where my degree isn’t marketable’. Many of us love the sciences. They are the basis of our interests since early on. However, reality needs to be checked prior to a degree. How long are you planning on devoting? How do you plan to market yourself? What are your plans to pay back loans if you can’t find but a job someone with 2-3 years of work experience and a hs degree can do? I feel privileged to have studied biology and to use it in my daily life. Although I don’t think about all the details of it all the time, the fact that I can understand how all of life works, how it evolved, how everything living is related, why disease occurs, how it can be treated, and what new solutions may come in the future, provides me with a deep sense of satisfaction. I can’t think of another subject that I wish I had studied instead that might have given me similar comfort. BTW, I’m 70 years old.
Hi! Can I ask you, have you stopped studying the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this fields of biology that interest you, by now? Has your education taken all these years or did you study for a certain period of time only, and then applied your knowledge in your job/s? (I hope the questions are clear, English is not my mother tongue) I don’t “study” it in the same way that you do in school with assignments and tests, but I’m constantly reading and learning about new things. If you don’t like biology, then it is not a shame to drop out early. But if you are really passionate enough, and you will find that out in the first few semesters of math, physics and chemistry courses, then you should follow the plan that you had for yourself. Experience is much more important than grades. You should still have good grades, but no one expects a GPA of >3.5 from you. A friend of mine has a Bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.1 and will submit her PhD thesis in 2 weeks. Don’t worry about your grades too much that it stresses you out.
You will be stressed out at one point in your career. Remember that your mental health is important and to take breaks if you think you can’t take it anymore. There have been multiple points of me breaking down during my studies, but it all turned out in the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this end because I had and have people around me that helped me through it. When choosing a lab for an internship or your thesis, remember to build good connections with everyone there. These connections will help you immensely after you’ve graduated. They can give you tips for applications and can review your thesis before you submit it. You will have some subjects that you hate during your studies, so hang in there. No one cares about your math or physics grade at the end of the day, they just care that you passed both of them. You will probably regret at one point going into Biology. But at these points, you are on your lowest and you will need to find reasons to be passionate about your subject again. So make sure you have a way out of this, either by remembering your work during your thesis, doing experiments or reading papers or books about your subject. Sometimes, even a good documentary can rekindle that flame of passion.
For the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this final, yes, it is harder to get a job in biology than in any other STEM field. I graduated with my M.Sc. in October and have had multiple breakdowns since. I’m currently on a mental health break before starting to apply for PhD positions. Do I regret going into biology? This is great advice. I love my biology career, too, fwiw, but the market is very tough, so I feel very fortunate and cannot take credit for all my successes. Skill and passion help, but perseverance and luck are also needed. I’ll add two pieces here: Don’t get an MS without a specific career plan for that MS. Waste of money unless it’s tied to a position you have some connection to already. Consider not throwing out those math grades. More and more biology will become dependent on digital/data skills, so I recommend me mathing up. Biology is the most complex science and you need sophisticated tools to both succeed and to differentiate yourself. I had a lot of friends in college who said they liked biology because they liked the idea of science but not the math stuff (why biology instead of physics, for instance). Don’t know one of them with a successful bio career. Loving naturalism is one thing, and can be a deeply satisfying life long hobby, but being successful as a scientist requires a lot of luck but also a lot of real science.

More and more biology will become dependent on digital/data skills, so I recommend me mathing up. I said math because the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this stuff you learn in math classes in collage is not important. The courses you mentioned are more statistics relevant, and even there you don’t need to know how to calculate a model by hand, just how you do it with RStudio and how you interpret it. Statistics is important, but math in general is very basic in most of biology. I have collegues in neurology who can’t even calculate a correlation, just because they don’t need it for their data. But during university, math and physics classes are so irrelevant that some universities don’t even grade them. They just count as passed or not passed.
I had a lot of friends in college who said they liked biology because they liked the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this idea of science but not the math stuff (why biology instead of physics, for instance). Don’t know one of them with a successful bio career. Probably because all of them thought those were far more important than they actually are. The stuff you learn in math and physics classes are irrelevant depending on your subject once you go into actual research. What you need to understand is the statistics and your data management, but not the math behind it. Except of course you chose a math heavy subject like biostatistics. But OP wants to go into genetics, where math isn’t as important. Not arguing with you, and yes, thinking from the perspective of work in the US. Appreciate you calling that out. Literally because I don’t have a PhD the best jobs I can get or paying 10 to $12 an houri’m literally now working at Walmart even though I have a degree in biology have worked in multiple labs and was working like 3 to 5 different grants at any given time while going through college and working with the MD/PhD programs. I was working on synthetic human skin and testing non melanoma skin cancers also work with species as Asian and worked on the golden ball eagle genome project and I loved it don’t get me wrong I love the field I love the work but I need to make my bills.
If you want some inspiration, check out some of the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this videos I posted 🙂 Biology is infinitely amazing. But like any career really, you need to be smart and creative about it in today’s economic. Learn something extra along with doing your degree, maybe doing a bit of coding, learn to do some graphic designs, or write some articles etc. It has a lot of options if you know what to look for. Doing a PhD also opens up a lot of opportunities in industry! Keep your mind open to the opportunities! There are other options other than just pure academia. I transitioned into life sciences law (intellectual property) where a biomed background is sought after – there are similar roles in consulting etc, you aren’t necessarily committing yourself to low pay for the rest of your life
First of all, this sub has mostly American members, so keep that in mind when making plans. I don’t know about the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this UK, but in general the pay is not that crappy in Europe. Yes, industry pays better but in academia you can still have a very good income. You can always make the switch. If you don’t want to continue in biomedical sciences, the ‘soft’ skills that a PhD (or masters) gives you can definitely be used to get into other careers. I was going to say something like that. When people say the pay sucks, then thats in comparison to other STEM fields, but its still enough to lead a good life In the USA with a masters degrees and lab experience in Making synthetic human skin ,certificates and being able to handle human samples, and testing non melanoma skin cancers along with working with specization and the golden and bald eagle genome project… I get paid more working at Walmart even with the masters and Walmart don’t care Walmart is literally hiring kids to do my job fresh out of high school. I know how you feel, I’m a biomedical science student as well. People think and worry about the future a lot which is why they always question their future careers. The truth is, you’ll never know what the future holds no matter what the profession is, so just pick the one you’re most passionate about and do your best. I think about the future a lot too but I always try to focus on the present and enjoy my academic life.
I’m not in biology so feel free to ignore me. I have 2 friends who both have their masters in biology and in 4 years since they’ve finish school they have not found a job in their field. Almost every person I know who’s gone into the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this field has left it because of how difficult the job search is. I’m sorry to say all that but from what I’ve seen it’s a pretty over saturated field. Some do find jobs, it’s just harder. But what do I know, I certainly dont want to tell you not to do what you love. Good luck. It’s so pitiful. Demanding bachelor degrees and experience with all these different tools for $12-15/hour. Sometimes there is luck with a $20/hr, but those are usually mid-senior level. How?? I make more doing basic retail! You can be a manager with zero degrees for $21-26!!
I had to stop pursuing my passion because it won’t pay the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this bills or the student loans needed to even work in the field. Either have a rich partner that allows you to work for love or struggle. I’ve decided to work in the health field because I’ll make enough money to eventually donate/volunteer to ecological resources. Well im only a freshman in college but I dont regret the classes in biology ive taken. I love all aspects of biology and am even thinking about studying abroad in belize to study marine biology. The only aspects of biology i dont really like is the evolutionary aspect. I still like it but i prefer more cellular biology Kinda, but at least I liked the opportunity to pursue a masters in Bioinformatics. I still love biology, but I wouldn’t choose it today.
There is likely to be an explosion in biomedical science in coming years as we accel in bio information in the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this private sector, Im sure you can make bank if you really want to and work hard. I am a biology high school teacher in California. I made $140,000 last year which I know is triple what teachers make in other states but it’s also triple the cost to live in California. I am at the top of the salary schedule, the bottom is $70k. I have former students making $200k in pharmaceutical companies doing data science or quality control. My brother and sister in law but work in academia as flow cytometrists and do well. I know the UK job market is very different- I met a nurse practitioner in The uk last summer who made $50k a year while my friend who has that job in California makes $250k. I also never liked anything as much as biology
If you are going masters/PhD, you will be fine. People complaining are the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this ones who graduate with a 4 year degree and try to find a career after that. It can be done but it is very difficult. Especially if you want to support a family. Getting an advanced degree you will be fine. It got me into teaching science at HS level. Taught biology for several years- teaching to a test, so not fun. Then I moved up to teaching Physics. Degree worked out great for me. I focused a lot of my graduate Biology courses on Micro and Infectious Diseases, and I loved it! I took Medical Microbiology, Microbial Pathogenesis, Virology and so forth. Today, I am using my Master’s in Biology to teach Pre-Nursing and Allied Health students. Just retired after 34 years’ worth as a F&W biologist in state service. The answer to your question all depends on you. Expect to strive as a temporary and compete for positions for a while. It’s true that some states/agencies pay sub-par. Some biologists privately consult on the side. Good medical and retirement benefits are not trivial.
Biology is a very vast field. If you specialize in biomedical science and develop a passion for research, you will find jobs in academia – although for quite a low pay. If you go in the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this private sector, the wages are higher but it might be more challenging to find something that fits you – as you will not find the same freedom as in academia. Personally, I could combine biology and computational science, which I learned myself during my PhD and now postdoc, which puts me in a nice sweet spot in terms of what biotech requires nowadays. I’d say go for what you like, find a niche that is somewhat relevant today and future proof, biomedical science is full of it, be as good as you can and you will enjoy it all the way 😉 I did a BSc in Australia in the early 90s. We had the recession we had to have while I was studying. I couldn’t get a decent job in my field (ecology, environmental management)…so became a primary teacher to value add in order to earn some money. I regret that decision every single day. I wish I had specialised in genetics (or something similar) instead. I was idealistic and back in the day wanted to do something to protect our environment. I also didn’t have anyone smart nearby to advise me. What an idiot I was!
I regret nothing. Perfect ten years of my life, full of adventures, explorations, and self-destruction. But I’m glad that I became a programmer when I got older. Unfortunately, you can’t feed your family with weird stories. Studied biology and specialized in arachnid taxonomy. Submitted my finalized M.Sc thesis on a Monday, did my job interview for a museum scientist position (taxonomist in their Arachnology department) that Wednesday, signed my contract the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this Friday and started my job the next Monday. The jobs are there. You just have to plan ahead. Peruvian biologist. Too much ego within the academy. Painfull stress due to deadlines, results, incompetence, lack of funding….On the other hand, when you get funding from the state, they get screwed and/or exquisite when you are accountable, that in the long run diminishes my mental health. Not at all! But if you’re planning on going into like research science…just know the path to do a bachelors, masters and or phd is long and competitive. The opportunities you get access to is awesome but BE SURE…I was more ambitious in my younger years and I ended up having plenty of stress and anxiety and was overworked and ended up changing my whole career path to be a lab technologist at a hospital. It’s more a choice of passion than money and work life balance. I enjoy being able to leave work at work and not always be on the clip even when I’m at home so I parted ways with academia. Would take me until 33 years old to get working because of this regretful path and because of that can’t start having kids until we were financially set up with two jobs which once your getting up there in your 30s becomes more difficult
I and a few of my friends did biology undergrads…. and only 1 of us is in a job where that undergraduate degree is directly useful to what we are doing now (we’re in Canada). I worked in hospital-based clinical research for a bit, but decided to go back to school for nursing and a big reason I switched was that the Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball cartoon the MVP rises in rio shirt in contrast I will get this opportunities for growth in my workplace and field were going to be limited unless I decided to pursue graduate studies – something I didn’t want to do. And even with that pursuit, the market is competitive. I don’t necessarily regret going into biology – I really enjoyed what I studied and my short time in research definitely helped me make connections, giving me gave me a good background for my new life path. I would say that I regret going into biology instead of nursing right out of high school. I wish I was better informed on the job prospects available with a BSc and nothing else, because it was more limited than I believed. Vs nursing which I was also somewhat interested in, and the opportunities are endless with this (especially given the circumstances of the nursing shortage where I live). Probably would have influenced my decision as I could have already have been a nurse for a few years now lol. But hindsight is 20/20 and you may as well spend time doing what you like! If you feel like you are making the wrong choice remember that there are always other options out there. Never too late to make a switch or a change!
