I just prefer to get the lay of the land first. No one cares, I wear size 0 guages, not huge but they are flared so they look bigger and I’ve had no complaints. I work in a corporate office as an account manager where I dress business casual. I’ve had my ears pierced for 35 years. The only time I had an issue was when I was a high schooler and the restaurant I worked at had a policy that only ladies could wear earrings. No one has said crap about them since. For the record, I am male. I have 2 in my left ear and one in my right. I gauged them up to 10G and have had the same captive ball rings in for the last 10+ years. I keep them clean and I dress appropriately for the environments I work in. Beyond that, I’m professional and good at my job. Both of which are more important than the jewelry I choose to wear.

Oh if it’s tech, they probably don’t give a shit. Express yourself. If you are client facing it might be an issue. If you are back office, showing up showered and in clean non-wrinkled clothes will put you on management track. Personally as a woman I would like them. Men don’t tend to display any sort of personal style beyond “my mom bought this for me 6 years ago” I have always had earrings and nobody ever has seemed to care but I always dress and present myself nicer than 99% of people. To be safe, I’d probably start without them and figure out what the vibe is first. It’s honestly probably fine, as long as you’re dressed professionally, but you’ll be a lot more comfortable and confident if you already know what kind of workplace this is. Guess it depends on the company and the people you work with. If they don’t have a problem with it then it’s fine. However, since your mom is older, I see where she is coming from. We’ve seen the level of professionalism drop in the last decade to where people come to work looking sloppy. I get tech is different but it doesn’t mean you have to follow the trend. In the end, it’s up to you. How do you want people to perceive you? Giving up those little freedoms one by one will find you years later scratching your head wondering how you fit yourself into a tight mould. It shouldn’t matter. It is 2023 not 1953. Most workplaces now a days this isn’t an issue. But if you want to be in the safe side, don’t wear them the first day or two and get a feeling on the dress code of your new place of employment. Dress better the first day or two as well so you set a good foot forward and then access how people dress and what you can wear to the office and what to avoid.
