One El Salvadoran girl absent mindedly said to me “my dad was a child soldier” and it struck me how lucky I am to live in a place where that wasn’t a possibility. Another girl told me she was berated by her parents for not running back into the school during an active shooter situation to find her younger siblings. They were blaming her for not taking care of them even though they ended up (relatively) fine. Yet another girl asked me if she could tell me the “funny version” of getting shot during the same incident.
