Well my parents didn’t have a lot of money and sometimes had to get creative to even feed us good food. We ate or went hungry… and what parent wants their child to go hungry – and start complaining or crying a couple of hours later. In general kids are forced to eat because they naturally graze which doesn’t work well with meals. If they graze their dinner they eat enough for maybe 30 minutes then they want more. I don’t know anyone who does this tbh. My mom’s group talked about such issues. I personally just made my kids try two bites of whatever I made, then they can switch to eating what they prefer, or prepare their own meal (now that they are teens) Eating to 80% full is the ideal way to eat and not overeat. Forcing eating or withholding food tends to lead to EDs. I got whoopings all the time for refusing to eat food I didn’t like. Guess what? I still don’t like them. I now have a long list of foods I hate, this list includes: sweet potato fries, black eyed peas, apple pancakes, beans and rice, mashed potatoes with skin in them, talopia, fish and grits, most desserts with fruits in them, and apple oatmeal. Thanks Mom and Dad, you’ve ruined foods for me! I always had to serve myself. My eyes were often bigger than my stomach and I would take you much. If I couldn’t finish what I had taken I would get told, “you took it, you eat it. “There are starving kids in Africa…” And I would be forced to sit there for hours until I could eat all of the cold food. I was not allowed to reheat it. I still have trouble with portion control and this has caused an unhealthy relationship with food and eating disorder to this day.
