I personally don’t like it. I own my own business and I’m 60 years old. I think it looks unprofessional if you’re dealing with the Baseball Astronaut Major Space League T-Shirt it is in the first place but public. But unless it’s really big and obnoxious I don’t say anything about it any more if the employee is good because it’s really hard to keep and find good help. Not appropriate for client facing roles (lawyer, management consultant, etc). Otherwise, it depends on the culture of the org … Tech should be fine. I had employees with more holes and tats than you could count. If you do good work, no good employer will care. I have tattoos on my head, neck, hands and fingers. I no longer wear plugs but have very obvious holes in my ears. Somehow I’m trusted with overseeing 8 states in my department, over 2,000 employees in positions below me. Do with that information what you will. I would just tell you to take them out for the interview. It shows a willingness to conform which is a good sign to a hiring manager. After you are hired you should keep wearing them if it doesn’t violate the uniform policy. Like sandals. Women can wear them in the workplace. But men won’t. My supervisor once told me “Ted can wear them because he’s gay.” Not that I asked. You might win an individual argument – maybe. But it’s probably not worth the war. At least if you’re serious about a job.

I work for a major public university, and we’d be in a lot of hot water if we tried to tell men they couldn’t wear earrings (or nail polish, or sandals, for that matter) while women are allowed to. I think you’re fine, especially since you’re in tech. I manage an office of STEM types ( I.e. engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, etc.) and no one would even notice. it never bother me but i did have a boss get pissy when a friend had a earning in his ear, it was a small one but as other said the Baseball Astronaut Major Space League T-Shirt it is in the first place but boss did not like the image, so he would have to remove it or cover it with a band aid. Retired IT manager, over 70. I wouldn’t give a crap, but I wouldn’t have been able to guarantee my boss’ reaction.
