Agricultural workers. Lots of people discussing fast food and market workers. But nothing agricultural, where food is grown and prepped for shipment…entirely dirt wages until management level, and even then on the Back To School Let’s Do This Happy First Day Student Teacher T-Shirt But I will love this low end of that category. EMT. They see some terrible shit deal with nutjobs and get paid $12 an hour for it despite tons of education and training I don’t think anything be will see this by now but dairy farmers and farm hands. People never seem to get that the people making the food are always on the cusp of being utterly broke, or are super underpaid. I’m seeing a lot of the obvious answers, so I’ll toss out a little lesser know profession. Closed caption transcriptioning. There are less and less of us every year, and we’re the ones making sure businesses/colleges are ADA compliant. Autogenerated speech to text is nowhere near the level of “humans no longer required” because human speech and audio quality just has entirely too much variation in it. Anyone who has seen YouTube’s auto captioning knows exactly what I mean. We get paid a flat rate based on “per minute audio”, meaning the size of the audio, and that pay is determined by turnover, which is decided by the client. Meaning, no matter HOW BAD the audio is (static, horrendous background noise, bad microphones, thick accents) I get paid a flat rate. Example, 100 minutes of audio. At a 4-day turnover (meaning I have 4 business days before it’s due), that’s $0.75 per minute. Let’s say I get two of them. One has crystal clear audio with no noise and takes me maybe 4 hours to do. That’s $75 at 4 hours, so that’s $18.75 an hour. But the second file, the audio is bad, there is tons of noise, people talking over each other, speaker is barely understandable. Now that same 100 minutes takes me 12 hours to do. I’m still making $75, but now it is the equivalent of $6.25 an hour. Our turnover ranges from 4 days to 8 hours. Clients can demand outrageous editorial changes that we get paid nothing extra for. Also, we’re classified as independent contractors, meaning 15% tax rate and no benefits of any kind. I made about $17k give or take last year, working 12-16 hours a day, sometimes going as long as 36 hours without sleep to meet deadlines. Had to pay nearly $3k after filing my taxes (married filing jointly, so not an exact $3k).

Back To School Let’s Do This Happy First Day Student Teacher T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

We’re the Back To School Let’s Do This Happy First Day Student Teacher T-Shirt But I will love this ones making sure the deaf and hard of hearing have access to their professors’ lectures, TV shows, movies, interviews, podcasts, recorded Zoom meetings. This job is NOT as easy as people think it is. It takes a lot of discipline, good memory as we have a TON of rules, fast typing skills coupled with good listening/capable hearing skills, almost perfect knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules (you’d be shocked how many adults need taught where commas should go). It also requires an impeccable amount of patience with human beings you’ll never even meet because most people have very odd or annoying habits when they speak, and every single one is unique. And of course, there is always the lovely fact that 95% of people have no idea how to set up audio recording properly.
