Not a teacher, But I am part of gen z and you are right. I was always considered a “bright kid” but as I grew up I felt that wasn’t at all true. Despite this there are times where I look at my peers like they are crazy for what they don’t know. But then after reading this I realize that there’s stuff I don’t know either. No specific example here but rather of vocabulary and writing. Two years of unprepared remote learning really destroyed them. It’s unfortunate but I really think it’s just a lost cohort without any kind of pressure from parents and school admins. I’m a public librarian helping to run a “reading comprehension catch up” program. Basically volunteers sit with the kids, the kids read things, the volunteers correct mispronunciations (trained to do it in a way that doesn’t shame the kid) and then ask kids questions to see if they’re comprehending what they read. We meet and revise the lessons for next week to make sure nobody falls behind. This is the first year I’m joining the program, but the library has run it for the last eight. The person running it has said that the numbers have steadily increased over the course of the last eight but has spiked up high in the last 2-3. The program targets 4th-6th graders and she said that last year, most of them read at a 2nd-3rd grade level. We’re not sure we’re going to have enough volunteers to teach all of the people signing up and we might have to turn some people away.

I graduated 2018, barely, because I procrastinated like a mf. Like you said, there was a class full of 17-18 year old kids who couldn’t sound out words, solve basic mathematical equations or follow along in a book without using their finger, and most of them graduated along side me. I thought for a while “maybe I’m just being a stuck up douche bag who doesn’t realize how lucky they are to have had good teachers and parents, and I shouldn’t judge them,” but those kids are in the work force now. I actually worked with a couple of them a few years later at a not so entry level job and it’s as fucked as you’d imagine. Idek man, I know it’s not their fault; the school system failed them….. but damn it’s bleak.

The English and Ed students are much better readers than average, but generally have no meaningful explicit knowledge of grammar. Their biggest deficit, however, is their inability to take negative feedback seriously, but not personally. I’ve had English students tell me that they don’t like linguistics because it’s possible to be wrong. They prefer literature, where their opinions are always given equal weight. The Ed students, on the other hand, often expect to get As on every assignment and test irrespective of their mastery of the content.
