I personally think because 30 years ago high functioning autistic kids were just labeled weird in school. They didn’t have friends. Im sure a bunch of factors such as quality of healthcare and possible ideas regarding mental health or interpretations of mild autism like “oh he is just shy or anti-social” also affect reporting rates. This is probably why it might be statistically “more prevalent” even though it might really not be in reality.

The DSM-5 is mainly based on studies done on white males (as with like 99% of healthcare in Canada/US). We still really haven’t gotten to a point of even trying to understand how things like gender, race, environment, etc can effect how a disability presents. It’s more socially acceptable for white males to present symptoms of a disability as well. Females and POC are more likely to learn to mask at a younger age which can delay diagnoses as well.
