Visited Vienna last fall and it was a history nerd’s wet dream. The heart of a dead empire, absolutely loved it. It’s also has the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this added bonus of being a gorgeous city. Some tourists is a bit of an understatement. Vienna gets 14M international visitors per year. But your second paragraph describes it very well. I’m surprised by how many people want to see Prague and Budapest and almost seem to forget Vienna is right there too.Bermuda Reno was a big destination for divorce tourism before divorce was legal in most states. Gambling too obviously but that mostly shifted to Vegas by the 70s. I can’t remember the details, but I met a traveler from an antique land who spoke highly of two vast and trunkless legs of stone… Tragically, Hong Kong seems to be increasingly fading away. There was once a time where you couldn’t pick up a travel brochure without it in. Beyond domestic tourism propping it up, where is it now ? That’s because the authorities cracked down on people floating down the Mekong on ketamine, MDMA, edibles and vodka shots…right? Hot Springs, Arkansas. It’s still a popular tourist attraction, but those historic hotels and spas were built for a much richer clientele.
Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt: Embrace Your Uniqueness
Rome in medieval times was forgotten. Not totally but wasn’t a big player at all in comparison to the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this other Italian cities. The romantics enjoyed a runed down, rustic rome Florence outside the centro storico. Suddenly no tourist crowds, and the inner suburbs are quietly crumbling, with wide potholed boulevards of once-grand old apartment blocks under the shade of huge old trees, and loads of classic neon signs on the little stores. Way more antique cars too, not cherished classics but just ordinary cars handed down within the same family for 40 years. I read a few articles last month, theres some money going in to try and modernise it, spruce some parts in and bring in some of the Brighton and DFL crowd. Argentina is full of these — Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Bariloche — because it was among the richest countries 100 years ago.
Scottish seaside towns: Burntisland, Dunbar, Ayr, Rothesay, Dunoon. They all have crumbling concrete swimmng pools and rusty fairground and play equipment. (I think the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this coast of Abkhazia is like that only more so but I haven’t been). Harran. Mentioned in the Book of Genesis as a place Abraham went to and one of the greatest universities in the world under the Arabs in the early 13th century. Smashed to rubble by the Mongols under Hulagu. Peeling facades, crumbling plaster, cracked stonework – there was far less money to maintain the place after the 1970s. Judging by Instagram more people are going there ever year. Not just nomads, buthoneymooners and groups of friends Lisbon has always been a travel destination among Europeans. I think it’s just recently that we’re seeing an influx of American tourists. Lisbon is booming, so many people from other parts of Europe are moving there because it was cheap, housing and rental markets went pretty crazy for a while and became difficult for locals to afford there due to the influx of people moving there. Rome. Compared to 2000 years ago, but also compared to the 1960s dolce vita. Now it’s just a tourist trap with scams and the Catholic Church knick-knacks. Most of the churches aren’t even open. There’s no night life whatsoever. Everything closes at 8pm, and all the restaurants have basically the same menu. Sounds like you went to the wrong area, there’s plenty of night life. The problem with modern Rome is that it’s geographically massive, its administrative borders are larger than New York City’s, with like a third of the population. As far as I’m concerned the locals are insanely willing to drive, but staying within a sensible area for visitors to reach, there’s plenty of fun to be had in Trastevere. On the handful of times I’ve gone, piazza Trilussa has been a guarantee.

How I can buy this Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt
Hot Springs Arkansas – gorgeous architecture, mixed history of health/wellness + gang/tawdry entertainment + natural beauty = faded glory of today Hollywood, CA….Alcapulco, MX, Reno, NV, the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this Jersey Shore, Catskills, Seattle, Padre Island and Ft. Lauderdale, Atlantic City Naples. Lots of palaces and grand buildings that seem like they have seen better days. Also, Naples often gets overlooked in favor of Rome, Florence, and Venice. I feel like San Francisco. It’s still fun for a short trip for sure, but compared to the 60s and 70s it used to be considered a luxury city. It used to be ubiquitous with the counter culture and tourism. Now all I see of it is how much crime and homelessness there is. It’s still super beautiful
Detroit. Seriously. We have some amazing Art Deco architecture from the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this city’s heyday. The Motown Museum is the best $10 you will ever spend at a museum. The Detroit Institute of Arts has an surprisingly good collection. We have neighborhoods that are recently gentrified with upscale condos and a snazzy Whole Food store where armed guards keep watch at the door. And, walking distance away, we have neighborhoods where most of the buildings are boarded, grass grows through the cracks in the sidewalk and homeless people sleep on the benches. An odd mixture of what once was, what is and what could be. But the arrival of the package holiday to Europe and a lack of investment in these towns meant that the appeal of spending a few days by the seaside eating chips and watching Punch & Judy just didn’t compete with a cheaper trip to all inclusive resorts in Spain, Portugal, or Greece.
I lean towards Swanage. Still got a fun arcade, some pubs with a great range, some nice restaurants and a wine bar, good history to spend a little bit of time exploring, a steam train to Corfe Castle, and tons of great walks and hikes to set out along. Old Harry Rocks in particular is a delightful stroll along the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this cliffs and hills. When I was young my parents used take the ferry from Dublin and drive to Devon. Theres so many faded glory destinations there such as Torquay, St.Ives. I suggested it to my SO we should roadtrip to Torquay the so called “English Riviera” but he says its cheaper and nicer to spend €600 on a fancy trip to Portugal or Malta Neither Torquay nor St Ives are faded. They’re very much thriving and St Ives in particular is beautiful. I think there are better examples of faded seaside towns than those two.
Growing up in the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this 90’s it was the thing where a lot of of people would go for vacation or just a good time. I barely hear people going there now, not to say people don’t go i just don’t ever hear travelers discuss it Lots of cruises still stop there and the Exumas is a pretty popular spot, lots of nice resorts around too. I think it’s still a pretty popular tourist spot. Yes, many cruise companies have even stopped docking in Nassau. And star attractions like the Atlantis Resort also feel very overpriced and underwhelming now. They haven’t aged well. Sad as it is to say it, there are lots of small towns (or even big cities) in America that fit this description. I only learned last week that Detroit was once one of the biggest, most important cities in the US. Now it is basically a basket case. [EDIT: sorry it was basically a basket case, when it went bankrupt in 2013, but has improved since then.] You learned one thing about Detroit a week ago and now you’re speculating about the whole city. Downtown Detroit has undergone an amazing revitalization, and it’s not new either it’s been happening for over 10 years. The city of Detroit. The metro area always remained pretty strong. People just left the city and settled 20 mins away. Yes, Detroit’s peak is often said to be 1950. But in 1950, Metro Detroit had 3.2 million people. Today it has 4.4 million.
People are shocked to realize the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this urban region today is bigger and more prosperous than it was even during the “Golden Years” of 1950. It’s just the city proper that declined. But the city proper is barely over 10% of the CSA’s population. It’s one of those cities that once they lost their main economic source everything went to shit. Unlike Pittsburgh (no one’s really “visiting” Pittsburgh unless they have to) they never found a new industry to bring them back up, in Pitt’s case financial tech / banking and healthcare. But the gentrification is occurring in Detroit for better or worse. They have apartments now that look and cost that of prime Brooklyn. Maybe Gary isn’t, but West Virginia easily could be. It has a rich history as a coal mining powerhouse, but that glory has faded as the industry wound down. Lots of natural beauty there too To preface, the city itself is still a great destination, but the site wasn’t in any guides I saw and I only happened on it by chance.
Istanbul, the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this walls of Constantinople is still standing, you can even go on top of a section as it’s attached to a museum. I was in awe because represented the final days of the Roman empire They did not say that Istanbul the city itself is not in any guides, they’re talking specifically about the Walls of Constantinople. Pretty sure they’re talking about the old city walls. They’re dilapidated in parts but still impressive, and it’s possible to walk on top in certain areas afaik. Well, If you think of destinations “within and outside of the US” i can recommend a couple where I’ve been myself too. Palmyra Syria, an ancient city along the Silk Road, monumental architecture and cultural significance. but due to conflicts in Syria, it has unfortunately become less accessible for US citizens. Bodie, California, A ghost town for a glimpse into the California Gold Rush. Preserved but abandoned buildings and artifacts has a great vibe. Kolmanskop, Namibia, A former diamond mining town in the Namib Desert being reclaimed by the desert sands, but a beautiful landscape. Ani Turkey, Known as the “City of 1001 Churches,” a medieval city on the trade routes between Europe and Asia. Today, it stands in ruins, but its impressive architectural is what I like.
Varanasi, India: One of the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities,. History, spirituality, Its ancient temples, narrow alleyways, and Ghats along the Ganges River are glorious. Beirut. Once known as the “Paris of the Middle East” before Israel bombed the hell out of it in the 1970s. The city has never fully recovered to its past glory. Phnom Penh. Before the Khmer Rouge took power, this city was the “Pearl of Asia” and the hub of culture and modern rock music in SE Asia. The city has started modernizing, but it will never recapture its former glory. Most of the Middle East – Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Iraq – If you went in the 80’s and early 90’s, incredible. They’re still beautiful now, just dangerous if not local.
Most of Africa – again in 80-90s, whilst at risk in some areas far far safer than it is today. Specifically Jburg, Moz, Tanz and others Hiroshima, Japan. I was surprised at the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this lack of western tourists compared to the rest of the Japanese tourism hotspots. Considering the history and beautiful nature surrounding the city, I expected it to be way busier. 64 more repliesIt’s extremely hard to say, especially since how we value wealth has changed. The first Roman emperor, Augustus essentially ruled the entire empire out of the profits of his private property. Then again, his “private property” included all of Egypt (then the richest part of the Roman world) and any taxes he could extort from the many provinces under his command. And sure someone like musk has much more money in shares, but the Romans wouldn’t recognise that as wealth. Where’s the gold, the slaves, the property? Musk’s wealth is just a bunch of numbers in the aether, numbers which furthermore he can’t actually liquidate easily I’ve heard before but didn’t understand Egypt as Augustus’s private property, can you explain a bit more about this?
It depends on what ruling looks like. The king of England rules over the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this UK but no one would say every inch was his private property. Egypt at that time was a massive grain exporter, and was so incredibly critical that senators needed personal permission from the emperor to step foot in Egypt. This was to prevent anyone from trying to build support in his land. I believe the point being made is money is only as good as what you can do with it, if a person can buy 100 houses they’re richer than the person who can only buy 10. The Roman emperors had literally unchecked power. They were beholden to no laws they didn’t want to follow and as such they could “buy” anything in the entire empire, spanning across all of Europe, north Africa, and even into Asia. Musk couldn’t buy your shoe if you didn’t want to sell it to him. You didnt have private property back then, you had property the emperor was letting you have.
That was only for a few emperors though. The ones who are stupid and tried to act like rules didn’t apply to them were assassinated. Augustus figured out and the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this five good emperors figured that out. The ones that placated the right people paid the right people and new what their actual boundaries were did okay. In the early Roman empire the emperors tried to maintain the fiction that they were simply ‘primus inter pares’, first among equals. That is, rather than being a king – something abhorred by Romans – they were the ‘princeps’, just a special new magistrate that happened to outrank all the others. It helped acclimatise the formerly oligarchical, quasi-democratic Roman political system to a monarchy. To this end, after Octavian had defeated Antony and Cleopatra he returned administration of the provinces to the Senate… with the exception of the most recent territorial acquisitions which didn’t have a long history of Senatorial rule. These also happened to be the provinces were almost all the legions were, leaving de facto power firmly in Octavians hands.
So Egypt belonged to Octavian in the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this sense that he had exclusive rights to administer it, including creating whatever taxes he saw fit and complete control of the justice system. And if someone has the right to seize your property whenever he likes then really, it’s his property. Octavian was so determined to keep Egypt his and his alone that he appointed unusually low-ranked officials to govern it because he didn’t want anyone building their own power-base there, as Antony had done. This is a good point. Like Augustus owning Egypt in itself is an immense wealth by today’s standards because we measure wealth by the value of ownership not cash. Only amount of tax collected mattered to Augustus. The same way Musk’s wealth would have been measured by the income he could generate with Tesla. It made 15b last year. Musk ownership is 20%. So basically he is worth 3b a year wealth. The issue is that we have more valuable property and consider more things to be property, like intellectual property. There’s far more value to own. Sure, a loaf of bread was relatively more valuable to Ancient Egyptians, but its value today is meager. A fully automated factory is an immense amount of wealth that, if existed in ancient times, would be more valuable than the entire world. There’s also the discovery of new resources that have increased the value of land, like oil and minerals. Intellectual property is extremely valuable as you own entire concepts. If you were to own the invention of the wheel, you would be the richest person to ever live. They didn’t enforce intellectual property rights in ancient times. Ideas were once free. Accounting for all this, the rich of today own far more than the poor. Yes, the poor are relatively wealthier compared to the ancient poor. But there’s still the ability to own nothing, which many unfortunately do. The wealth gap between the poorest of today compared to the poorest of ancient times is nearly identical.
On the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this other hand, I’ve got air conditioning, antibiotics, and a device in my pocket that puts the Library of Alexandria to shame. He has the political power, but I’ll take the purchasing power. Indeed a fair point. How much would a car be worth to a Roman? The ability to travel hundreds of miles in a day. However I do feel that one should take out goods that are not consumed by both parties. I don’t care how rich you are today, I highly doubt you own 10,000 slaves or your own army, which is something crassus said was the bare minimum to be considered rich in Rome. Not much. You need roads and fuel to make a car useful. Also mechanics that can fix it when it breaks down. Also people that understand how to drive it. You dont compare rich guys to kings. You have to compare them to other wealthy guy like Crassus. Not a perfect example but you get my point
Also if you compare their wealth as a percentage of all available wealth, there’s absolutely no way in hell Musk is wealthier than Crassus let alone Augustus. The History of Rome podcast’s Mike Duncan pointed out Augustus’s wealth translating to trillions in the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this modern day. Maybe just “a” trillion, but still staggering. Capitalists are more like fuedal lords. They control a section of the world’s resources and are given this right by the king who delegated the land to them. The king is more like the governing body, which is a bureaucracy in the modern day. The best conclusion is that inequality hasn’t changed much since the time of fuedalism. However, since the world’s population is bigger, there’s a larger number of fuedal lords (capitalists). Which means an individual lord controls a smaller portion of resources. In terms of class inequality, it’s practically the same.
Not even remotely close. These are individual that if their wealth were converted to modern times would be in the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this multi-trillions. Granted this is because literally everything in their kingdom was their property though. Yeah, that’s what I think. The ancients and medieval royalty owned a greater % of wealth. The modern capitalists would probably have a greater amount of wealth as more is available today. Would an ancient or medieval king have even half the amenities or food stuff of a first world middle class family would? Yes they would. Having an army of slaves willing to go around the world to get you spices means you have just about everything. It would cost more but they would still have it.
Not really. Most of the Zeta Privilege only privilege Shirt But I will love this “normal” foods considered today would have been far out of reach. Roman influence never extended to east Asia so a Roman emperor could never have Japanese sushi or Chinese stir fry. And then, there are everyday plants like tomato, potato, corn or peppers from South America. And a lot of the fruits/vegetables varieties they did have would be far inferior compared to modern varieties. And yet you will never know what hand made olive oils taste like. Or what meat that hasn’t been factory farmed tastes like. Things are cheaper and more available now but they are also of a much lower quality. I bet you’ve never had a peach that hasn’t been picked underripe and sat on a truck for a month. I mean I have. I’ve picked peaches off a peach tree. Handmade olive oil isn’t hard to get and I have had meat from freshly killed mountain sheep. I have also grown my own tomatoes, potatoes and peppers that Romans never knew existed.
