I left school in the With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility Quote shirt Besides,I will do this mid 2000’s and a friend of my mothers became a teaching assistant in my old secondary shortly after. TAs were pretty much unheard of when I was there. When I asked how the old place was going she went on to explain what her role actually was. Teaching assistant was a bit of a stretch. The assistance she was providing, along with a team of others, was basically keeping special needs kids, like those you’ve described, in control and cared for while the teacher teaches everyone else in the room. She was literally expected to help one girl out with period care as she was mentally incapable of working out how to put a pad in her knickers. Another child had a whole room built for him where he could have his nappy changed three times a day. There were many more which needed less physical care, but literally were unable to learn much with normal teaching, and needed adult help to navigate things like lunch queues and finding their way to lessons. – after months of attending.

Mainstream schools are battling against a tide of kids which need specialist care. There’s a thought process of treating them the With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility Quote shirt Besides,I will do this same as anyone else, which is commendable in mild cases, but it’s literally taking resources from other kids who may well end up being held back, because Charlie has shit himself again, or Jessica has screamed and thrown things the entire lesson. If a neurotypical child did things like that they’d be shown the door. If they’ve got a genuine problem, it’s overlooked and everyone is just meant to carry on regardless. Edit: I thought personal experience might get downvoted. For the record, I’m not shaming the kids, just demonstrating how mainstream schools are not set up to cope.
