I feel the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this same when I don’t buy the things that older women are trying to sell me in plazas, or when I don’t give money to people asking on the streets that seem like they really need help . Just a heads up I’ve been convinced to buy $50 of milk powder for a burn victim because she couldn’t afford to feed her baby. Later I saw her returning the powder in the shop for cash. She was obviously desperate so no judgement but it’s a common scam That is a common scam. If you want to help locals find a good non profit to donate to. Don’t give money to people on the street. While some may be legit, most are scammers and/or part of begging gangs, including small kids If it helps the lady was likely conning you. There is a scam where they are in partnership with the shop. The woman asks for baby formula and the shop sells it to you at an inflated price, once you leave the formula is put back on the shelf and the money split between the woman and the shop owner.

This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt: Embrace Your Uniqueness

if you want to do some good then look for a reputable charity and make a donation once you have some money to spare. I think there isn’t any way to really get over this if you’re aware of other people’s reality, that’s basic empathy Being grateful of our chance/privilege to travel and being born with a relatively easy life is the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this bare minimum and listening/caring about those stories is a step in the good direction. But I don’t think you can achieve “getting over it”. If you think you can help people do it but don’t do it only so YOU can feel better those are not good reasons even tho I guess it still helps. I try to find a local charity to make a donation to. I’m in Egypt now and skipped an early morning hot air balloon ride that some on the tour group did (I am irrationally scared of hot air balloons) and went to Animal Care in Egypt instead. It’s a British run charity that provides free veterinary care for horses and donkeys primarily but small animals too. I got a tour of the facilities, hung out with the cats, and chatted with one of the volunteer veterinarians from New Zealand. And donated what others spent on the balloon. The hot air balloon ride was one of the worse experiences for me in Egypt because upon landing we were swarmed by a bunch of dirty kids begging for a dollar. A couple even hung onto the van as we drove away. It was absolutely heart wrenching but it’s not like you can donate a couple dollars without getting ruthlessly harassed by the other kids. I’m glad you were able to find something wholesome to do!
Simply giving people money does not fix anything…may want to read up on how charity can cause way more harm if done poorly. I like to recommend 3 Cups of Tea, and then the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this Jon Krakauer hit piece after. JK brought some next level pettiness to the table, and I was here for it. Mmm… Idk about all that. I mean I agree with the charity part, that’s pretty much destroyed an entire continent. US poor people have it much easier though, it’s not like LatAm countries have EBT, shelters, an abundance of soup kitchens, section 8, caseworkers, etc.. if I decided tomorrow I just wanted to be a bum and stop working I’d have no problem surviving in the US. That’s a bit strange to ask a foreigner… it was most likely a type a scheme they were trying to pull off on you… good thing you trusted your instinct and kindly said no. The truth is, you’re on your own, you were just watching after yourself. Don’t feel guilty. And like the others had said, there’s a high probability it was a scam.

How I can buy this This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt

Nah, there’s nothing to do with her being a foreigner as they probably do this with locals too. They just want the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this money from a good person no matter where they are from lol I don’t have a good answer for this. Great question. This gets me too. Everyone out there just trying to get by and I feel bad saying no, for those I don’t buy from. Even haggling for prices in places where that’s the norm when it’s all within my budget easily. Edit to add that I’ll be reading other comments for advice too. In the meantime I remind myself that I can’t save the world. It’s not all up to me. I don’t feel any guilt saying no because 1) it’s not my job to help them, 2) I could be putting myself in danger or setting myself up to be scammed, and 3) I’m cold and dead inside when it comes to this stuff. If I want to be altruistic, I’ll volunteer somewhere. I support local economies by tipping well, not giving handouts to beggars.
Remember that there isn’t much an individual can do to reverse poverty, but giving away $20 or whatever might make a huge difference to whoever is on the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this receiving end. I just try to set aside that money ahead of time. I think of it as a tourist tax and work it into my budget. I wouldn’t feel guilty. Honestly you can get into more trouble for doing good than doing nothing. It’s much better to be safe than sorry.. As a former homeless person, I empathize heavily with anyone who asks for help. Because it is such a humbling experience for me when I had to ask. I personally give as much as I can (if I have it), or feel comfortable doing when the situation is right. I do buy and support local vendors, I don’t haggle prices down, and I do give money or food to those who say they’re in need. Simply out of the kindness of my heart. It’s not my job to judge them or question their intentions. It’s just my job to give. If people are not acting with the best intentions, that’s on them and they’ll have to live with themselves for that. As for me, I’m always going to give for the right reasons.
The first lesson in traveling to countries that aren’t of the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this same eco social status as the United States; pretty much every country, except the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Canada, Japan, Australia, and I’m sure I’m missing a couple, is to be aware of your immediate surroundings at all times, and know that you as an American will stand out unless you purposely try not to. If you look at all like you’ve got money, or that it’s your first time there (wherever you are), don’t know the local language, etc., you will be subject to every little scam and manipulation out there ready to take advantage of you. Knowing that and believing that is your first method of defense and then spring boarding from that you can’t let yourself be pulled into or manipulated emotionally for the purpose of satisfying someone’s sad story or immediate need. Beggars and thieves wear suits and ties too And they’re gonna bet on the naïve American traveler not seeing what’s coming. You may feel bad but just know that that’s irrational when you’re under attack by, fulfilling, some other person’s charitable need. Put your heart in the right place for the right things, but don’t wear it on your sleeve for everybody to latch onto when you’re traveling and trying to have a good time. But that’s just me.
Thx 4 correction. in the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this middle of stenciling 17′ x 9′ wall using a small sponge. 36″x 36″ stencil. White on Gray. White rose peddles. I’m usually pretty street smart but I once almost got scammed in NYC. This homeless guy outside a McDonals said he hungry. I offer to buy him food he said he want money so he can get “some of that shake shack”. It was some type of expensive burger and wanted $20. Never again. It’s a common scam. In Miraflores Peru you’ll see people do that all the time holding baby’s. I lived there for 3 months and saw them with a different kid every day/ couple days That’s a common scam. You’ll get more callous with experience, remember you’re one person, you’re not making or breaking these people one way or the other. If you’re really struggling with first world guilt keep a pocket full of candy for the kids, volunteer, donate to an organization
Learn to grow a thick skin. I have a long time ago, don’t give money (usually I “have no cash”) and don’t feel guilty. I tip well or very well for a service, but that’s about all. Don’t stop to listen. Keep walking, give no eye contact. The scam only works with inexperienced people. Just remind yourself it wasn’t real so you didn’t miss to help someone in need, you avoided being targeted. You might just save yourself. Never feel guilty for such things. You do not have reponsibility for that, and there is a big chance that it’s a scam, which would hurt you financially or even worse physically. As noted in the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this article, they vetoed the one that allows Hamas to keep hostages. They actually submitted one that includes the return of all hostages which hamas rejected. Interesting that isn’t being highlighted more. OP purposely left out half the headline “US vetoes UN resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza after [the us] proposing a temporary halt in fighting”
E: if the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this author themselves changed the title that’s one thing, but the sentiment still stands. Biden didn’t reject the resolution bc he has the ghost of Henry Kissinger whispering in his ear, he did it because the resolution was not strong enough. As much as I think Biden has no backbone, he’s doing right by those families. Headline is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. Getting people mad at America, particularly Americans, is big business. Journalism is no longer serious nor dogged. They’re housecats fully dependent on their owners for belly scratches and kibble. > Following requests by several Council members, language was apparently added during the negotiations demanding “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address [the] medical needs of all hostages”. Many members apparently also requested Algeria to include a condemnation of the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks, but it seems that these requests were not accommodated.
How is this a detail being left out? The demand for hostage release made it into the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this Algerian draft. The top comment is just wrong. The Algerian-drafted resolution vetoed by the U.S. did not link a ceasefire to the release of hostages. It separately demanded an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield argues that a cease-fire without requiring Hamas to release hostages would fail to bring about durable peace. No, there was no mechanism to compel them to release the hostages. Just saying “we demand you release them” is meaningless without anything behind it No UN resolution is binding. Even if you predicate one on the other, THERE IS STILL NO MECHANISM TO COMPEL THEM. This is meaningless pedantry. Also, people are just stupid because they are too lazy to be bother to read. Yeah, the detail is in the article, because that’s what an article does. It explains the headline. Do they want a paragraph long headline? The UN has condemned Israel about a billion times. I’m sure they can spare a condemnation or 2 for Hamas, if they felt like it. There are 50+ Muslim majority countries in the UN, so they don’t have anything at all to disagree with Hamas about. I am very thankful for the US veto used so often against this bloc over the years.
They already did. The ICC immediately signaled its desire to prosecute Hamas leaders after October 7. They already have jurisdiction, so it really is a matter of nations in ICC jurisdiction doing the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this leg work to arrest and extradite them. The UN Sec Council doesn’t need to act against Hamas if international counter-terrorist forces do their job. In contrast, Israel isn’t under ICC jurisdiction by choice. So, the only avenue to get anything done to prevent a genocide has to go through the ICJ, the General Assembly, and the Security Council. If Israel prefers, it can sign onto the Rome Treaty so they too can be subject to ICC jurisdiction. Then this wouldn’t have to be so political. Spot on. Everyone screaming “ceasefire now!” Needs to realize Hamas is rejecting offers of a ceasefire that coincides with the release of hostages. I want the bloodshed to end but allowing Hamas to keep hostages 4 months after capturing them is outrageous and just shows how little Hamas cares about the Palestinian people.
The deal HAMAS turned down was crazy. Israel would release 10 prisoners for every hostage released on the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this basis that all hostages were released immediately. Israel would also agree to a three month ceasefire. They turned this down because they wanted every single prisoner (including the ones who carried out the attacks that spurred all this). All the folks at r/internationalnews are nonstop salivating over this shit now actively referring to anyone who takes refugees for Palestine as part of an ethnic cleansing. Can you quote the line of the article that says Algeria wanted Hamas to keep the hostages? It does not say that all. The immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, explicitly requested by resolutions 2712 and 2720, as well as by the draft that was just rejected, must take place without further delay.
A demand to release the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this hostages is not sufficient on its own; the ceasefire needs to be conditional upon the release of all hostages. CNN is owned by the conglomerate Warner Bros Discovery, a publicly traded company. Primary owners include Vanguard and Advance Publications among other institutional investors though none owns more than 10% stake. The United States has vetoed a resolution at the United Nations calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, an anticipated move that comes amid growing international clamor for Israel to pause its offensive against Hamas. The US had already signaled its intention to veto the Algerian resolution, but has grown increasingly critical of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and on Monday proposed its own Security Council draft resolution calling for a “temporary ceasefire” in the conflict.
Attention will now turn to the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this progress of the American draft resolution, which falls short of the wishes of most other Security Council members but nonetheless highlights a hardening in the White House’s stance on the conflict. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Ambassador to the UN, told the Security Council the Algeria-proposed resolution would negatively impact sensitive negotiations ongoing in the region. ”Proceeding with a vote today was wishful and irresponsible, and so while we cannot support a resolution that would put sensitive negotiations in jeopardy, we look forward to engaging on a text that we believe will address so many of the concerns we all share,” she said after the vote. Algeria’s resolution, while doomed to ultimately fail, served to highlight the increasingly widespread global concern about the tenor of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)’s ground and bombing campaign in Gaza.
It’s not highlighted because the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this Algerian draft explicitly demanded a release of hostages and the reddit commenter you got riled up by is incorrect. Including a demand for the release of hostages is different than making the release of hostages a condition of the ceasefire. What happens when hamas decides to disregard this demand and doesn’t release anyone? Except now people will claim that the current phase of the war is because Isreal broke the ceasefire while leaving out that hamas refused to release the hostages. If a ceasefire agreement falls apart without the release of hostages either way, it seems entirely reasonable to want hostage release included as a condition of any ceasefire agreement It is different, but it’s a much different implication than the US just vetoing a demand for a ceasefire in a vacuum.
The ceasefire would null if there is no move toward releasing hostages. The document as a whole would only be worth its weight as toilet paper. Israel rejects a ceasefire deal that would return hostages. This has been floated by Hamas and shot down, explicitly. There is no ambiguity on this. Left to their own devices, for now, they will only accept a surrender of Hamas. That is why the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this U.S. struck down the language. Israel went with that deal even ignoring a couple attacks during the ceasefire until Hamas stopped releasing hostages. Stop with your propaganda bullshit. The UN is horribly anti Israel. Add onto that all the 3rd world muslim nations that vote as a bloc to try to fuck israel any way they can.
incorrect. the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this draft proposal did ask for the release of the Israeli hostages. it did however bot condemn the October 7th attack. note it also didn’t ask for the release of the over 1000 Palestinian hostages held in Israeli prisons without charge or legal recourse. afaik it also did not ask for an end to the occupation. note the US alternative proposal asks for some sort of temporary peace when it is convenient for Israel. so in other words the resolution asks for essentially nothing. Hamas is the party negotiating and hostages are their only leverage. I agree- hostage taking is despicable and Hamas is unfit to rule. But what’s their incentive to accept? Is amnesty even on the table or are they choosing between death fighting vs sentencing at a tribunal and maybe getting life in prison? I mean the incentive is otherwise being annihilated by Israel. It’s more like, what’s Israel’s incentive to ceasefire? lmao Except Hamas is suicidal and homicidal, and they don’t give a shit about how many Gazan civilians die while they engage in war against Israel. As long as the average Hamas zealot thinks that dying while killing Jews is a one way ticket to heaven, theres no reasonable way to get them to stop fighting. Unless you convince the selfish Hamas leaders to change their minds and we know the billionaires who run Hamas care more about their money than about their ideology.
Except Hamas is suicidal and homicidal, and they don’t give a shit about how many Gazan civilians die while they engage in war against Israel. Hence why the This is Australia we eat meat we drink beer and we speak fuckin’ english shirt But I will love this entire idea of a meaningful ceasefire with them is compltely ridiculous and this whole argument is a waste of time. All we can really do is insist they give the hostages back and disband, or face destruction. Even if they will not accept it, that’s still the course of action that is correct. Agreed. If they disband and throw away their weapons and gear maybe they’ll survive because nobody will find out if they’re war criminals that’s the best they can hope for. Yeah but Israel isn’t indicating (afaik) that they won’t annihilate Hamas after a quick break. To the contrary, Israel has said they might bring back the death penalty and the mission is to eliminate Hamas.
