I’m so used to bring late to the party I didn’t even check. Oh well in half an hour nobody will be able to tell anymore and everyone will forget right? Right? If this is just as strong as building or if conventional materials, this would be amazing. Houses might even be cheaper since the cost to build would be lower. The margins on newly built residential construction is tighter than you might think, between 10 and 15% gross margin, especially if the builder doesn’t cut corners and produces a home that will still be livable without remodeling in 30 years. The land has always been expensive, but labor has been going up quickly for the last 15+ years, and now with the cost of some building materials nearly doubled since the pandemic, building a 50+ year home for less than 200$psf (cost) is really hard. The cost to build will probably become cheaper, but it’s naive to believe that companies will not charge the previous amount before 3D printing. Companies will benefit, not House builders. Cost to build with an on-site 3D printer is likely way more expensive than mass manufactured modules that are built off-site and then just installed when the time comes.

I’m an architect and journalist who has covered ICON and visited a few of their sites, and they are not going to displace traditional building methods. I’m an Electrician, I’m sure they arent printing my conduit, boxes, or wires into the building. I’d tend to agree with you, still interesting to watch. From what I understand, most of the time they print the walls hollow, so all the piping and electrical goes in between the inner and outer walls in the gap. So you think the houses they are printing, they intend not to have interior lighting in? They are of course taking that into account, and install conduits where the designers have them laid in. Adding switches would of course be more difficult, but it’s not like they don’t know customers want electricity in their homes. Watch the Matt Risinger video he did a few months ago… they are printing in pockets for boxes and channels for the conduit. I wonder how strong those 3d printed houses are, I’ve seen the concept way back then and wondered how those houses will fair against earthquakes or really strong winds Mass scale 3D Printing is definitely pretty futuristic I gotta say, don’t think this was on anyone’s radar 10-15 years ago
