I’ve been in London for ten years since I was a student and my quality of life has, relatively speaking, barely changed even as I advance through work. I have a little bit more disposable income for maybe a meal out at a restaurant or to buy some extra clothes (and certainly nothing extravagant), but not enough to push me into long-term life aspirations like buying property or starting a family. I’m still flat-sharing in roughly the same types of buildings and areas. Yes, I’ve got enough left to get through the month and a bit extra but it’s basically just pocket money and I’m not processing in life.

And the industry I work in is NOT doing well from an employment point of view, so I’ve earned less this year than I did when I was 27. For a long time I justified it as eschewing of rampant consumerism, but my god it would be nice just to buy nice things just because I want to.
