The mistake was calling it “minimum” wage in the first place. It went from the minimum amount it takes to live, to the minimum amont they can get away with. I’ve got a friend who has been hustling for the last 15 years and is FINALLY starting his own real business in the construction industry. Not even a large business, mind you, like him and a handful of employees. And he’s done okay for himself in the past 10 years or so — oh, and they have no kids and his wife works full time too. My point is, for a normal person with zero advantages (ie. No family money, no free housing while you “get your shit together”, no Angel investors, etc…) it’s bordering on impossible to actually pull yourself up out of the swamp. It’s extremely difficult and, in his case, his wife’s income (and lack of children) has given him a safety net so at least their major bills are paid every month.
