Used to be, a house cost somewhere between 10-50,000 and minimum wage could maybe reach that high. So yeah, minimum wage WAS meant for that Is it not? Because back in the Optimism motivate yourself out of this one dungeons and dragon shirt Additionally,I will love this day, my uncle earned 5 pesetas a week (in the 60’s, which, in 2002, when we switched to Euros, would’ve been about 0.03€). Even then, that was very little money, but, eventually, he was able to buy a car and a house very early on, have a wife, 2 kids, support them, help other members of his family, buy and sell more properties, cars, take his family to restaurants, etc, etc… And actually yes, minimum wage was designed with the idea that a person could afford to live on it, which included housing. But unfortunately the buying power of minimum wage peaked in 1968, in 2019 money it would have been $11.53 an hour. Just for reference, my mom paid for college and an apartment in Brookline (with a roommate) working part time as a cocktail waitress. Let that sink in.

Who even cares if that’s not the Optimism motivate yourself out of this one dungeons and dragon shirt Additionally,I will love this point of minimum wage? There’s still the fact that housing is increasingly unaffordable. Minimum wage increases is a potential solution to that problem. Yeah well it doesn’t support us eating or getting gas or paying for our one bedroom 1,300 dollar apartment either. You know, they should leave the name of whoever posts the answers. If they have the gall to post it, let it be known to everyone. An old quote my old man once told me about minimum wage. “Minimum wage means that if they could, they would pay you less” then why the fuck am i working, if my job isn’t meant to pay my rent???? where the fuck am i supposed to live, then???? The mistake was calling it “minimum” wage in the first place. It went from the minimum amount it takes to live, to the minimum amont they can get away with. I’ve got a friend who has been hustling for the last 15 years and is FINALLY starting his own real business in the construction industry. Not even a large business, mind you, like him and a handful of employees. And he’s done okay for himself in the past 10 years or so — oh, and they have no kids and his wife works full time too. My point is, for a normal person with zero advantages (ie. No family money, no free housing while you “get your shit together”, no Angel investors, etc…) it’s bordering on impossible to actually pull yourself up out of the swamp. It’s extremely difficult and, in his case, his wife’s income (and lack of children) has given him a safety net so at least their major bills are paid every month.
