You’re absolutely right that poverty/working conditions definitely contribute to mental health problems. Depression definitely does have many ways it can be caused, and speaking for myself my depression is definitely not a sole result of work and finance stuff. But it certainly doesn’t help me feel better, working more than my body should be and never having enough. Therapy does help for many, if they can access it. Not trying to “push an agenda” just thought it would be nice to share. Idk about anyone else but I’m really working on mental health but certain things that influence it, I cannot control. Poverty is one of those things. This is exactly the Miranda Lambert Music shirt moreover I love this point I’m at. Therapy helped me majorly with alexythymia and figuring out what my emotions are & how to express them. Add to that grounding techniques, mindfulness, and learning to center when I start having panic attacks/flashbacks, and therapy has literally saved my life. The tools I learned there have helped me alleviate almost all of my self-harm behaviors and find better outlets for my anxiety/stress. Therapy definitely helped me avoid further hospitalization. Tbf, poverty is not my only issue and I’m working through PTSD issues as well. But money is an ongoing subject I continually complain about and my therapist has no answers for me there. Honestly, she’d book more sessions if I could afford it, but here we are. I really don’t know what the future holds at this point. I’m always gonna thumbs up therapy if anyone decides on that for themselves, but I also understand the oppressive pressure of feeling like any upward life movement is almost based on luck more than hard work. Stuff like that just sits in your brain, y’know?

The debate over “whether or not poverty is the problem” is effectively irrelevant if poverty prevents you from being able to afford therapy. I might be reading the meme wrong, then. If I am, I apologize. Symbolism can read differently to different people. It looks to me like it’s devaluing the efficacy of therapy and antidepressants, both of which I accessed for free to help me begin to recover from my severe depression and ptsd caused by my last corporate job. You’re right that therapy isn’t easily accessible to everyone, but…wouldn’t that energy be better put to helping people who clearly need the help? I feel strongly that the energy put into this meme is instead a good way to invalidate the feelings of depression that can come from post-partum hormones, or ptsd, or a serotonin deficiency, or childhood trauma, or sexual abuse, or any number of other things. It simplifies an incredibly complex problem, as you pointed out. I guess from my own struggles with depression, I felt a bit marginalized having read that. Perhaps I overreacted, and I’m sorry if I came across harshly.
